So do tell me Kadre since when has a desire to invade Iraq been such an essential aspect of being an American that to lack the desire is to be un-American?Talon Karrde wrote:It stems from the fact that liberals are generally against our efforts in Iraq, plus Republicans see them as taking terrorism to lightly.18-Till-I-Die wrote:Yes, i too am puzzled. I'd breathe a lot easier if people could drop the attitude of 'my country name = a holy thing.' So what if someone's un-American? Whoopy friggin doo. ANTI is another story, implying working directly at cross-purposes to, but un? Un is nice and neutral, and as long as you aren't obsessed with the concept of your nation being a fair approximation for, say, a deity...

One caveat to Elfdart's analysis: Pennsylvania was very German even before the post-48 immigration. The "Pennsylvania Dutch" are all German (they were "Pennsylvania Deutsche"). As just one example, my ancestors Peter and Johann Heinrich Daubert immigrated to the US in the 1750s. New York, Boston, and Baltimore were mostly Anglo-Saxon; Philadelphia was heavily German until the potato famine, as evidenced by the only ethnic-named section of town: Germantown. Most others I know are named after people, such as Jenkintown. The suburbs are what have Anglo-Saxon names, with Upper Darby, Lower Gwynedd, and the like.

Why isn’t that ever an issue of politics? Because you don’t live in a democracy. You live in a plutocracy. Money rules.
