Firefox and BBCode

Post by 2000AD »

Since switching to Firefox, i've noticed that i can no longer highlight then click the appropriate code butoon when making posts, as that just adds an open (or close) tag for the function to the end of my post.

Is this to do with FF or the board?

FF. What you found there seems to be an IE-only function.

Shit.
Is there a patch for FF that lets you do that?

I don't think so. Anyway, I hardly notice the problem, since any post which I'm going to use formatting in is usually long enough to make using the buttons annoying (they get annoying when the text does not fit in the textbox, and the text scrolls up when you close a tag. ).

Wouldn't the problem lie with phpBB as opposed to the browser?

Unless I am mistaken, yes and no. The problem often is in the browser itself, basically hindering it doing certain things in intergrated text boxes that include a script code that the browser does not understand. There are, to my knowledge patches that can be dled which "install" - probably the adequate word to use - the script coding into your browser files. If it is the script, then I cannot help you at all, since whosoever makes the coding for this board might be able to fiddle around with it...

I use Konqueror, on a SuSE machine, and it can't do that either, but hey, it can't even do alt + b for bold..., but it rocks elswhere.

The problem is indeed with phpBB's implementation. vB's WYSIWYG form system works on both IE and Mozilla, for example, though not as well on the latter.

If that is so, which I believe, is there anything that can be done to allow the highlight and click the b button, for example, to work again? :?

Well as we have found:

Firebird: Yes (?)
Firefox: No
Mozilla (Firefox predecessor): Yes (?)
Konqueror: No
IE Yes (?)

Available patches IIRC for: Konqueror, IE, Firefox (?)

Firebird is a definite yes as is Opera. Nifty little feature, I've always wondered how people did those huge part by part quotes, now I know.
