FSB to be renamed into the MGB!

Vladimir Putin has decreed on the revamping of Russia’s domestic security service, the FSB, and other power-wielding agencies, the Gazeta newspaper reports. Authorities are expected to unveil their plans on Wednesday, the paper reports. The reform will affect, first and foremost, the Federal Security Serivce (FSB), that is to be renamed the Ministry for State Security.

Putin signed the decree Sunday, the Russian Information Agency Novosti reported. The new agency will assume practically all functions of the Soviet-era KGB, with the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) and the Federal Security Guard Service (FSO) being incorporated in its structure. At the same time, some of its functions will be transferred to other agencies.

In particular, certain types of crimes hitherto investigated by the FSB, will be probed by yet another agency, reportedly to be called the Federal Investigative Service, or FSR, that will take charge of all investigative activities.

Investigators of the Ministry for State Security will look into the crimes directly affecting national security, such as terrorism or espionage. Before the reform is launched the decree has to be approved by the State Duma, Gazeta writes.

I find this ironic, considering that the name that Valberg chose for
our Soviet Agency in DrakaFic is the......MGB.

It was only a matter of time. All we need to do now is replace the M with the K, and we'll be back to the good ol days of the most feared intel service in the world. Minus the communism bit, but still with the authoritarian tendencies.

I was wondering why they even bothered with the symbolic move of changing it to a 'M'.

I hope they introduce the Chief Directorates (was there like 12 of them, or only 8?) I kind of miss them already

And here's the fun part: THE DUMA WAS NOT INFORMED OF THIS UNTIL IT HAPPENED.

I'm willing to bet that by the end of his current term, Dobbie will be elected hereditary president.

However, Shep, you're out of luck. The plan to rename the FSB was dropped.

This is disturbing: Does anyone here realize that from the end of WWII until just after the death of Stalin, the MGB (yes, the acronynm had the same meaning as Putin's MGB) existed as the USSR's state security/secret police force? It was originally the Commissariat for State Security (NKGB) before and during WWII, but after the war all the commissariats were converted into ministries, and so the NKGB became the MGB. During Khrushchev's post-Stalin restructering, the MGB was merged into the MVD (ministry of internal affairs), which was called the NKVD when it was still a commisariat.

You sure it's dropped? The Moscow Times seems to indicate confusion on the issue.
