More powerful, the Old Republic or New Republic?

Post by Dark Primus »

I'm little bit curious on which of these factions was strongest in military sense, which faction had the biggest fleets, which faction had the largest ships, which faction had the strongest ships?

I think I have seen quotes the NR navy was around 5 000 ships strong at its peak? Well technically that is a lot of firepower given advancements in packing in more heavier weapons in smaller ships.

But what about the Old Republic?

I think it depends, is this a hundred years before AOTC? The AOTC Republic was quite powerful with their new fleet.

NR Navy was 5000 ships strong at its weakest point, when they were in the process of rebuilding the government and military after Operation Shadow Hand. By the time of the NJO, their fleet numbers in the tens of thousands (well over 10k in the Battle of Coruscant), still not comparable to the Empire, but much more than a mere 5000.

Pre-AOTC the Old Republic didn't HAVE an army. Palpatine proposed a 'grand army of the republic' and had made the clones in secret. The one in AOTC was part built in haste, part in secret, making it more impressive. However, the NR had gone through years of military buildup fighting the Empire, so would therefore SMASH the pre-AOTC Old Republic. Though if the OR had their clone army...it might be different.

I was under the impression that the Old Republic didn't have much in the way of a navy, it's been a thousand years since it's needed one or so, hasn't it?

Exactly. "There hasn't been a full scale war since the formation of the republic!" "I propose the formation of a grand army of the republic to counter the increasing threat of the seperatists!"

There was no army before AOTC, the clones were grown in secret and the ships built/bought on the fly.

The Old Republic did not have a singular army or fleet except some bare bones stuff and whatever the Jedi wanted, the member's however had their own individual armies and navies.

There was no large "Federal" military; however, the local systems and governments had their own defense forces which were quite extensive. This more or less meant that it would have been very difficult to defeat the Galactic Republic by external thread. In the time it'd take to defeat the local defense forces, the federal government might well be able to begin mass mobilization and field their own large armed forces.

Those ships had poor range, and in addition to that, the New Republic took control of sector navies (i.e. Mon Calamari and Bothans), therefore they could call up those ships as reserves. In NR era, sector navies have much longer ranged ships (as that style was used in the Clone Wars).

Other than a few sector navies in the Core, the OR has its weak Judicial Forces, made up of stuff like CR90s and Dreadnaughts. The NR would steamroll the Old Republic from the prequels.

Somehow I doubt that. The Trade Federation WAS part of the Republic, and in raw tonnage the blockade force at Naboo was significantly greater than at least the offensive arm of the Imperial Navy's destroyer force.

Now think of all of the TradeFed, and all of her sister corporate consortiums. Than of all the aristocratic and industrial sectors like Kuat, Alderaan, etc. with forces in league with that of the Imperial Starfleet.

Versus the New Republic of The Black Fleet Crisis Trilogy, with intact infrastructure and economy? The NR sucks it down. HARD.
