It isn't that hard to see why. Priests spend a great deal of time alone with children and despite the abuse scandals, no one ever suspects a priest of being a pedophile (it's always the other town's priests).

Even if celibacy does not cause pedophilia - I still maintain that it does, at least in part - it's a stupid tradition that should be abandoned.

I've spent a lot of time alone with women, women who have found me attractive, yet I've never been even remotely tempted to try anything with them.

Pedophiles experience an involuntary compulsion towards children, they have to; how could it conceiveably be a choice?

You're missing my point. The priesthood attracts people who are already pedophiles because they can spend time alone with children, I wasn't suggesting the preisthood creates pedophiles.

Oh, there was a scandal, but not the level of outcry you would expect. After all, the Catholic Diocese was actually defending known pedophiles and they weren't being universally condemned the way they should have been. There wasn't a loud outcry, but the level of outrage among the Catholic rank and file, at least here in the Northeast, was considerable. They weren't going to the papers and badmouthing the Church, but they were damn well making their feelings heard to the Church--witness the absolute zero tolerance policy the American bishops tried to institute.

Which was overruled by Rome IIRC. Their logic was that forgiveness should be given to anyone or some such bullshit.

Which it technically should according to Catholic doctrine.

However, that is not the same as following secular law which would probably forbid a sex offender from being in a position where they were dealing with lots of children (IE being a priest).

On top of everything discussed, noticed that the pedophilia cases are somehow mystically increasing over the recent decades... Is it because we have more priests, or because they do it more often and get away with it? Wonder which one it is? More (strange) priests or stranger priests. (Is it just me, or why am I having trouble to describe that...?)

Or is it that people are making this topic non-taboo? That simply more of the unknown cases are coming under the magnification lens?

Several pressure groups have called on Bishop Kurt Krenn to quit, after child pornography was allegedly found at a Catholic priests' training college.

Bishop Alois Schwarz urged the Vatican to intervene, saying only the Church itself could resolve the crisis.

As many as 40,000 sexual images were allegedly found, [b]but Bishop Krenn has dismissed them as a "schoolboy prank".[/b]

Officers confiscated computer hard drives from the seminary at St Poelten, about 80km (50 miles) west of the Austrian capital, Vienna.

The Freedom from Religion Foundation has been reporting on things like this for years before the mass media picked up on it. I'd say it was more a matter of people sticking their fingers in the ears and saying "Lalala can't hear you" for centuries. There've always been drunks beating their families but no one did anything about it or talked about it and everyone pretended that it didn't happen. Doesn't mean it didn't happen.

Also notice that many of the plaintiffs in these pedophilia cases are older adults. They were abused twenty-thirty years ago. You do the math.

40 I could believe in 1 or 2 locations. That's just finding a kid-porn site and downloading the images to diskette, and putting them on a computer via explorer.
