I disagree. Why? If politicians of any stripe were truly great leaders, we'd be way better off than we are. Politicians are simply folks who know how to kiss asses and get their palms greased. A few are leaders, but this isn't necessarily a good thing, nor are leaders necessarily politicians. Gandhi, a leader, was not a politician (or at least not one that was taken seriously). Hitler was a leader who happened to be a politician, to put another spin on it. 'Average Joe's usually don't. Which is why I'd rather have industrial workers, secretaries, engineers/scientists (especially them, they have brains), small businessmen (also especially them, they are what make the US great), and yes even prostitutes running the country, as opposed to lawyers, big business executives, or money grubbers from PACs (who comprise most politicians).Durandal wrote:Oh so they're honest and moderate? I think average guys (and gals) would be as good if not better than the shmucks in Congress anyways. Average folk may not be the brainiest bunch in the world, but they'll be honest (moreso than most politicians anyways), and their positions will more likely be in the center.Durandal wrote:His whole platform is "I'm a good candidate because I represent the average guy." Well hey, Dick, I don't want "average guys" making important decisions in the legislature of the most powerful nation on Earth.
I recognize the concept of being led by leaders, not sheep. I don't understand this anti-intellectualist movement in this country. All of a sudden, it's cool to be deprived of education, a "gangsta," being smart is something other people should be afraid of, being an "average guy" makes someone more qualified for important positions in the national legislative body and every opinion is considered equally valid. George W. Bush's presidency is a consequence of this bullshit "Everyone is special" movement going on in the country right now. At least Ditka was a decent football coach, not that it makes him qualified for the senate. Bush was and still is a completely mediocre man living a completely mediocre life.I would, personally, take a congress with prostitutes rather than the lawyers we have today. That way, instead of congress screwing us, it'd be the other way around.
Or are you so afraid of average folk getting power? Snobby, are you?
You know why average Joes don't do very well in political office? Because they become puppets to the other, smarter politicians. They can be easily manipulated, and the first guy to pull his strings now has two votes in his house of Congress.
Mike Ditka would be a good politician because he'd punch out a couple of annoying Congressmen. They'd probably deserve it. He should accept the nomination; there haven't been any good fights in Congress in awhile - it's been 150 years or so since the last decent caning.
Perhaps I am not 110% serious; i do like some politicians and folks in related categories (look at my sig to see two politicians and an author who I like). I still think they (politicians) are dishonest bootlickers, who get money without earning it (vis a vis bribes and backslapping).

Ditka apparently changed his mind, citing the fact he's got a bad temper and is probably too conservative for many voters.

admiral_danielsben, you fail to appreciate Damien's point. Our leaders aren't great; comparitively though, average Joes would be a lot worse than what we have.
Come on, look at the Revolution. Would that have really ended up panning out as well as it did without an educated class of intellectuals running the show? Please.

Industrial workers don't know shit about international politics or law. Scientists' talents are better suited actually in the scientific community. The reason lawyers are in Congress is because they know the law. What the fuck does Mike Ditka know about Constitutional law? Oh that's right, nothing. Same for a prostitute or a secretary. Would you want a congressman welding your car together? No, because he doesn't know shit about welding!admiral_danielsben wrote:I disagree. Why? And what do you think would happen to average people once they were introduced into that system? The same thing. Average people are exactly the types politicians are skilled at manipulating. Put Mike Ditka in the Senate and watch him dance the party line.Mike Ditka would be a good politician because he'd punch out a couple of annoying Congressmen. They'd probably deserve it. Politics doesn't attract corrupt people; it attracts honest people and then corrupts them. That's just the way it is. As much as you would love to think that a football coach would make a good senator, he'd be caught up in that system. And he would either adapt to survive in it, or it would chew him up and spit him out.
