I partially agree. I think what's wrong with his concept is not wanting to create a realistic space sim, after all Independence War had a similar goal and was one of the best space games of all time. But Independence War didn't try to be all things to all people, unlike the Battlecruiser series. It limited its goals to creating a realistic small starship (unlike BC's huge starships) to pilot within the framework of canned missions, and it worked brilliantly.Slartibartfast wrote:I'll tell you what is wrong with Smart's concept: it's a stupid concept. Sure, it sounds very nice to make a "true" space simulation, complete with stupid controls and 300-page technical manuals. Like some people like their flight simulators, right? because they want to feel like they're in the real airplane, right? and they want everything from the throttle to the landing gear to the flaps to the air conditioning button to the switch that controls the seat dildo to the snow plower in the front of the F16, right? Same with tank simulations, submarine simulations...
So it stands to reason that people want a Starship/Battlecruiser simulator, right? FUCKING WRONG! I'll tell you why: there's no such thing as a "space warship simulator". What we really have is 3D space shooters - from Wing Commander to X-Wing to FreeSpace, we have fucking awesome shooters (like First-person shooters but in space), and they're fun as hell, but nobody gives a shit about accurately simulating a starfighter that DOESN'T EXIST. All we need to know is which button makes the other fighter go boom, we don't care about nonexistant technical aspects like activating the warning lights before we turn on the hyperthrust because otherwise the spacewing undermajigs get spacefrost otherwise.
Sure, sometimes it's fucking great to give the "illusion" that you're doing stuff like power management (all power to front shields! match speeds! turn down the inertial compensators!) but we really don't want 500 controls and gauges with nonsensical, nonintuitive three-letter labels on them. We like our INS or our ECM or our AIM missiles because we kinda know what they mean (and if not, learning about them military terms can be fun and enjoyable) but if you're going to make up a thousand fake acronyms to confuse people into thinking you're a god, well that's just completely retarded. And so is Mr. Smart
Honestly, it's the "pilot" equivalent of Technobabble.
It didn't try to incorporate meticulous crew placement, a trading model, atmospheric flight, a dynamic universe, etc. etc. etc. BC3k tries to do all these things at once, and while it's a unique game that some love despite its flaws, most gamers agree that it doesn't accomplish any of its goals particularly well.
It should be noted that the sequel to Independence War DID try to incorporate a few extra things, like trading and free roaming, and while it wasn't a bad game, it was a mere shadow of the original.
I'm a firm believer in limiting one's scope and accomplishing those goals with excellence, and the BC3k philosophy is the anti-thesis of that.

I missed that link earlier, oops. I usually skim around the pages after i read the OP.
But...i did get done reading through the Flame Wars page about this Smart guy...
Oi. This guy is very choice, a real go-getter. I can understand why everyone is pissed he baught Freespace. I also saw the part where he fabricated the e-mail to prove some guy he met over the internet was stalking him... ...this guy is in serious need of an ass whuppin', just onec, to knock his 'tard head out of his ass.
As a side note...after looking at the pictures and stuff, i noticed he looks the spitting image of my brother Al. Dresses like him too. Freaky.

Crossposted because HLP server is a bitch.
Although, seriously: what does Smart have to gain from acquiring Freespace? The love of the community - oops, screw that. And he's already more or less said that if he does get the license it's going to be in the vein of the Battlecruiser games. He's already completely dedicated to the BC series; if he somehow acquired Freespace, all that would mean he has to either work twice as hard to develop the game, or scrap the existing BC universe and risk alienating his small core of fans. Nobody is that stupid, not even Derek Smart.
With that in mind, I see three alternative possibilities:
1) Smart is genuinely interested in the license, but more as a "badge of honor" rather than as a serious venture.
2) Smart wants to scare someone else into buying up the license, thereby sparking a revival of the genre in which he, Derek Smart, will receive prominant focus.
3) He's just stirring the pot because he can.

Here's my thought. Make a freeform planetary aerial-flight game. Tune it, patch it. Then make a freeform ground combat game. Then (if you're planning this from the beginning), transfer the gameplay code from the first into the second's newer engine. Then once you have that taken care of and out there, make a third game, a spaceflight one, then with taht newre engine, plug the previous two in. It'd be an ironclad bitch to do, of course, but then again so are this man's REPEATED Battlecruiser games, and the end result would be that each portion of the game is /finished/ one by one, instead of all half-assed all at once.

That's what the dudes who made the Interlocking series of games did. They made two games: Breach (a real-time tactical squad game) and Rules of Engagement (a Star-Trekish tactical space combat game). Both provide not only a campaign but also mission and campaign editors (to make mission trees and shit), and at some point they thought: hey, wouldn't it be cool that if you boarded a ship or raided a planet during RoE, the game launched Breach and you could play out the actual mission? So they did exactly that: two completely separate games that interact with each other in a cool way.
With Battlecruiser, you have clipping errors that result in a Marine accidentally walking into space and thru the walls of a spaceship, because they actually make the poor little guy try to walk on a sphere.

Smart did *not* say he'd make it like Battlecruiser. I read that thread pretty thoroughly.Although, seriously: what does Smart have to gain from acquiring Freespace? There is no way that any FreeSpace 3 that Derek fucking Smart developed would be able to surpass the work that the HLP Source Code Project has produced. You should just take a look at what those guys have managed over the years, the graphics make it seem like a brand new game (well, with the same engine).
Holy shit! I haven't followed the FS2 community for a long time. Kinda wish I had now. The screenshots on the HLP site are absolutely stunning. Of course, even without the SCP, the 6 year old Freespace 2's graphics are still on par with the majority of brand new games (or better than them). That's the most amazing thing of all.President Sharky wrote:There is no way that any FreeSpace 3 that Derek fucking Smart developed would be able to surpass the work that the HLP Source Code Project has produced. But yes, seeing the way the light and shadow from different colored suns reflected off a destroyer for the first time with the SCP made my jaw drop.l
