Just because Thrawn is a great battlefield commander doesn't mean he'll be a great chess player. Patton was undoubtedly a better general than Kasparov would have been. Does that mean if Patton were still alive, he could whip Kasparov's ass in a chess match? Chess is an abstraction with strict rules, and it's a game with which Spock is familiar and Thrawn isn't.

It apears (to me at least) that 2d chess is a sort of subset of 3d chess. I imagine that it is a lot easier to go from 3d to 2d than vise versa, and both are probably easier than starting from scratch.

Also I can't see thrawn's greatest strength, his prediction of his opponents actions, helping him much. Spock will simply be playing the most logical moves. Predictable, but not exactly easy to deal with.

Spock is smarter than Thrawn will ever be, but Thrawn is a stratigist.
