n00bish Counterstrike:Source question

Post by Stark »

Is CS:S *supposed* to look just like CS?

As in, barely any improvement, hardly amazing, quite a letdown? I downloaded the E3 trailer (cause some of my friends from college deride my UT2k4 playing, on account of HL2 which will descend from heaven right after Jesus and be amazing), and I actually thought they were showing OLD CS in order to contrast it with the AMAZING CS:S later... but they weren't. It looks shit. Why are people waiting for it? Is it a cult? Is there a handshake? Is there another, updated version of CS for HL2? As much as I despise the Church of OMG!!!!!, I was pretty shocked at how lame CS:S looks, and am genuinely curious.

E3 video of CS:S i got (the one on the end of the HL2 demo) looked quite good, especially the water and physics.

Perhaps my expectations were too high, but I expected something markedly superior to the graphics of UT2k4 mods, which that wasn't.

I noticed the barrels as a physics demo, and the water splashes; but really, is that IT? Is that what people are waiting for? It doesn't look bad, its just not the Holy Grail. Perhaps CS:S is intentionally not very good? The vanilla stuff I've seen is much more impressive. Maybe CS:S is a straight port, or something. Excuse the CS n00bishness :)

From what I've been reading over at Planet Half-Life, that's exactly what it is. Just a port of Counter-Strike v1.6.

Phew. So is there another CS for HL2 that actually uses the HL2 engine properly? If so, any idea why they'd make both?

CS in Source is meant nothing more then as a port into a new game engine. This is NOT CS2. CS2 is on the drawing boards.
