Imperial and Republic combat doctrine

Post by PainRack »

Now, realistically, we all know that no one in Lucasfilml, WEG or any of the associated companies with Star Wars had heard of these terms called C4ISR and ILS(Intergrated Logistic Support). However, certain canon and EU materials, written both in the 80s and 90s can and do suggest the existence of such capabilities, if not doctrine in SW.

For example, the minature Hoth game, in which the battle of Hoth is recreated via minatures supposedly stated that probe droids were used alongside the AT-ATs in the battle. This suggests the intergration of intelligence, surveillance and recon into the normal C3 doctrine. Furthermore, stormtroopers being able to inform a centralised control to close the blast doors, and open the blast doors in ANH also suggest that the two way command doctrine, along the implications of the "from the foxhole to the command post" logo of the US latest RMA is in effect in the Empire.

So, the question is this.

1. Can anyone list any other known examples for both the New Republic, as well as Galactic Empire for a C4ISR doctrine, or the current RMA?

2. Can anyone list any examples for the case that the Empire has a Intergrated Logistic System in place? Or the Republic for that manner?

".. the Floating Fortress addresses some of the logistical problems faced by the cumbersome AT-AT walker." Imperial Sourcebook, pg 69.

"It is known that Stormtroopers do siphon off some supplies from the normal chain of logistics, but not nearly enough to support a force as large as the Stormtroopers appear to be." pg 76.

"..in addition, there are 23 support personnel, eight in logistics, 11 in technical, and four in medical." Line Company details, pg 80.

"SB2 is the logistics officer, SB3 the medical officer, and SB4 is the technical officer." Battallion, pg 85.

"The Navy rarely sets foot upon the worlds which it patrols. For them, warfare is an exercise in logistics and computer programming.", pg 129.

"The Imperial Navy is divided into four branches. Line Branch handles strategy, tactics, and administrative functions primarily through its Deck, Logistics and Administration Divisions, its three largest specialities.", pg 131.

Hope this helps. I came up short with direct mentions of logistics for the rebellion, but I know it's indirectly mentioned many times.

Nightmare, intergrated logistics doesn't mean logistics per say, but the linking of industry and depots to fighting troops, in a coordinated fashion. I'm more looking for quotes on whether Sienar deployed technicians to provide maintenance and logistic support for TIEs, spare parts factories set up and so on and forth.

I would see the manufacturer having to provide technicians to provide TIE support as a weakness, not a strength. It's the hallmark of hangar queen/ poorly broken-in aircraft- the AH-64 Apache needed it in Desert Storm, for example. Normally, reps from the manufacturer/designer should only be needed to provide initial training familiarization.

Errrr....... what do they call that stupid last phase of maintenance again? The one where they essentially strip the aircraft down to its chassis and remove its parts? Usually, they now commercialise it to the parent company.

Yes, I know logistics doesn't automatically mean integrated logistics. But I figured you might be able to tie different info together. Logistics is after all a chain.

The Empire has nationalized several defense contractors, so it may very well be the case that the corporate representatives that give technical aid to the military are also commissioned within said military.
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

Still not exactly what you are looking for, but maybe a bit more relevant. The page numbers from before are screwed up, btw.

"Regimental HQ is where the most extensive
repairs are performed, and some HQs even have
a capacity to machine or nanomanufacture precise
spare parts from very basic components." - pg 93.

"Corps HQ is often augmented with a huge
number of MSE-6, I2F-5 and I2F-73 industrial
droids - as many as 2,000 in some instances.
These droids serve as a mobile processing and
manufacturing plant, particularly with the introduction
of repulsorlift-enabled models of the
I2F-73 which acts as transport for most of the
other droids. Such a complex can manufacture
everything from glow rods to blaster packs to
repulsorlift engines upon demand, using the
crudest and most impure raw materials." - 99.

"Deepdock facilities, while not as efficient as
the shipyards of the major starship manufacturers,
have the advantage of being hyperspace
capable. This not only shortens the time required
to get damaged combat starships repaired,
but makes deepdocks more difficult targets
for Rebel attacks." -pg 109.
