Does the press WANT a gaffe or fuckup?

Post by Stravo »

Consider the ridiculous amount of coverage given to Mrs. Kerry's "Shove it" remark, the Kerry's space suit=Dukakis in a tank bullshit. Its like the press just cannot cover an event, they cannot simply fucking report on what's happening. They want there to be a gaffe, a fuckup., a scandal, and if there is even a briefest whiff of it, they will do what it takes to make it the scandal that they seem to want.

Is this phenomeneon something that has been in the media since the beginning or is it a byproduct of the 24 hour news networks hungry for constant headlines?

On a similar note, didn't the VP tell someone to "fuck off" recently?

I would say the media has always had this problem to some extent, but the 24 hour networks only made it worse.

That he did, the 9/11 comission no less. I heard about it for about two seconds.

He told Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy to fuck off (over Halliburton, IIRC), not the 9/11 commission.

What makes Heinz-Kerry look bad is that she told that reporter to shove it just after she gave a speech decrying the lack of civility in politics.

The fuss about Heinz Kerry is already over.
It lasted just as long as the fuss over Cheney telling Leahy (and it had nothing to do with the 9/11 Commission) to fuck off.

And yeah, of course they (the media) want a gaffe or a fuckup. Those make excellent soundbites to lead off a 30 second story with. Reporting that Kerry's wife gave a speech or Cheney posed with Senator Leahy isn't nearly as juicy as reporting that Teresa said 'shove it' or Cheney said 'fuck off'.

It's just like the Don Henley song 'Dirty Laundry'.

So, yeah, the media is looking for a gaffe because those look significant in the public eye, and boost their ratings. They'll do the same during the RNC.

I was actually planning on making a thread about the whole hoopla made over the John Kerry spacesuit thing.

I mean why the fuck is all this a big deal? I definetely think its a problem with the 24 hour cable newsmedia. I mean, he was wearing a clean-suit or whatever to get a tour of the Space Shuttle. What's the big fucking deal? It's not a big deal, but the media makes it a big deal, to boost their ratings. Even though I despise Dick Cheney, I didn't care about the "Fuck you" thing. So what? It's a word, there doesn't need to be press conferences, and news coverage of someone saying "fuck you," or "Shove it," or wearing a clean-suit for a tour of the Space Shuttle. I just want all of that tabloid shit off the TV, and for them to actually start reporting objectively on things.

Why not just cover the news, and stop making all these non-issues into this yellow journalism bull shit. Television "newsmedia" is slowly going down the drain into almost being tabloids.
