John Stewart's Daily Show 2004/07/28
Did anyone else catch the Daily Show last night? They made ruthless fun of the Demcrats' "son of a millworker" and "son of of a goat herder" bullshit, and Biden came on and openly called it "crap" himself! Fucking hilarious.

I caught Stewart's review of "Democrat Dance Party Night".

Kerry, then? Edwards, as I recall, really did come from humble origins.Darth Wong wrote:The "humble origins" crap.Joe wrote:Of which crap do you speak?

They were just kind of making fun of the fact that all of the speakers were really capitalizing on the humble origins aspect. I think the way Jon put it was something to the effect of "They worked crappy jobs so that I could get the hell away from those hicks while still using their memory to promote myself"Joe wrote:Kerry, then? Edwards, as I recall, really did come from humble origins.Darth Wong wrote:The "humble origins" crap.Joe wrote:Of which crap do you speak?
It was a good episode, but not as good as the previous night. Biden was a better guest than whoever that New Mexican was, but the technology piece was only so-so, while both Colbert's "Primemory Lane" and especially Corddry's piece on Boston (both from the 27th) were top-notch.
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

It's "crap" on two levels. On one level, some of these claims are exaggerated (albeit not all, as you point out). But on another level, the way they harp on it is shameless rhetoric. Even if it's true, who cares who your father was? What matters is what you are right now.Joe wrote:Kerry, then? Anyway, the donkey ball-licker part was just fucking hilarious.

It was "goat ball-licker" if I remember correctly. Stephen Colbert is one sick fuck.Darth Wong wrote:Anyway, the donkey ball-licker part was just fucking hilarious.
Though I did like when Stewart showed the clip of Obama saying his father was a goat herder and then went, "Oh, you wish your father was a goat herder!"

I loved the part where they caught Hillary and Chelsey gloating over champaign over the demise of Howard Dean.... and then tried to act innocent and pretend that the camera had caught nothing.
Devolution is quite as natural as evolution, and may be just as pleasing, or even a good deal more pleasing, to God. If the average man is made in God's image, then a man such as Beethoven or Aristotle is plainly superior to God, and so God may be jealous of him, and eager to see his superiority perish with his bodily frame.

Dean's only truly major mistake was putting himself against not just the President but against the party leadership; one-man revolutions tend to end up in hangings.
He was right, though, the Democratic Party needs new leaders and new leadership; the current leadership seems engaged in a wholesale ideological surrender to the right.

I was very impressed at how fast Chelsey caught on (I'm assuming she saw something somewhere). Did that actually happen during Dean's speech? I know the Clintons were not big fans of his, but I'd hesitate to say they were toasting his failure.BlkbrryTheGreat wrote:I loved the part where they caught Hillary and Chelsey gloating over champaign over the demise of Howard Dean.... and then tried to act innocent and pretend that the camera had caught nothing.

Yeah, it's impossible that mother and daughter were just enjoying some champaign during a speech. No, they're Clinton's after all. Something sinister must have been afoot.

It's likely that they were talking about having a sultry three-way affair with their hot young pool boy.Durandal wrote:Yeah, it's impossible that mother and daughter were just enjoying some champaign during a speech. No, they're Clinton's after all. Something sinister must have been afoot.

I also noticed that Jon Stewart has joined the GDC, though I don't remember if it was on the 27th or the 28th.

Don't be stupid. They were obviously conspiring to have someone killed. Last night's episode of TDS demonstrated perfectely why it is the best show on TV in my opinion. That "humble origins" parody was classic. And that whole "technology we use to cover the convention" stuff was great parody of CNN making a big deal over their stupid little headphones they got for the convention.
TDS has the best writing on TV, and some of the best personalities on TV with Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Rob Cordrey, and Ed Helms. And as another poster in another thread pointed out that Jon Stewart said that The Daily Show was "anti-BS" TV. I couldn't have said it better myself, as TDS catches all the BS on both sides of the political spectrum (and I do see a little bit of a liberal bias, but I don't mind it that much, it's refreshing after all the conservative talking heads in a lot of media these days). And I also love the "newsmagazine" type stories they do with various nutjobs.
I also love how Jon doesn't ask bull shit questions to his guests, of all interviewers on TV I think Jon Stewart is the best.

To be fair, Barack's point with all the "son of a goatherder" stuff was not "My dad was poor - I rule!", it was part of a larger theme about opportunities and America.
Anyway, it was funny.

I think its a fair conclusion considering that it happened during Dean's speech. If they were talking about something innocent then they wouldn't have stopped and put on that "I got caught doing something I wasn't suppose to be doing look".Durandal wrote:Yeah, it's impossible that mother and daughter were just enjoying some champaign during a speech. Am I the only one who DOESN'T think The Daily Show's Boston appearance has been stellar? Jon's intro at the start could have been done in New York, and the correspondent peices have either been green screened peices (again, could have been done in NY) or have just plain not been funny. (Rob Corrdry's Boston, the Correspondents talk to random journalists)
Sure...if you're Richard Clarke or Joe Wilson. Stephen Hayes got eviscerated, because suddenly Jon donned his Mr. News Man cap and began poking holes in the guest's theories about Iraq/al Qaeda. Yet if he had been half as vigorous with RC or JW, we wouldn't have needed the 9/11 Commission.I also love how Jon doesn't ask bull shit questions to his guests, of all interviewers on TV I think Jon Stewart is the best.
