Pardon my newbie ignorance here folks...
How do you rate http://millenniumfalcon.com/ as a reliable news source? The same old stories about changes to the OT DVDs have been copied and pasted from there onto other messageboards that I frequent, and everyone's got their knickers in a twist.
I've no intention of letting this topic rear its ugly head yet again, but at the same time I can't help wondering if there's any truth to it.
Yours (with apologies) in anticipation of a swift thread-locking,
DD

I'm a believer. There's a ton of cannot-be-fake stuff there- including sound clips of ESB DVD changes to dialog.

Hearing McDiarmid´s voice makes that scene more interesting than before, and with the additions to the dialogue, you almost get a sense of sympathy for Vader, trying to feign ignorance about Luke in front of his master.
IF that´s what Lucas is going for, that is.
Haven´t heard anything about the rest of the movie, so there could be two scenarios: Either Vader knows who Luke is, and is trying to find him before the Emperor finds out, or they´ve cut out the dialogue where he mentions Skywalker before this scene, and he really didn´t know. We´ll see on the 21st, if they don´t leak the movie beforehand.

You know, you´re not exactly the first person ever to criticise Lucas´ way of handling his film-releases, if you´re expecting the O-OT out on DVD one day, prepare for dissapointment.but if these "new" special editions are indeed the only versions of the OT to appear on DVD, I won't be buying them. Screw Lucasfilm and the Bantha they rode in on
Fuck this shit. OT-SE DVDs are better than NO DVDs at all. It would be nice if Lucas could eliminate some of the problems with the SE, but keep some of the good things (few and far between but regardless) then we have no point to complain.VT-16 wrote:You know, you´re not exactly the first person ever to criticise Lucas´ way of handling his film-releases, if you´re expecting the O-OT out on DVD one day, prepare for dissapointment.but if these "new" special editions are indeed the only versions of the OT to appear on DVD, I won't be buying them. Disappointment? Nah, I'll just watch my ten year old VHS versions until they fry .
I liken what's happening now with the OT to Stanley Kubrick's attitude about A Clockwork Orange. Mere weeks after Lucas pops his clogs, we'll see our favourite films out on DVD just the way we remember them.

Good things about the SE:
- Improved VFX all round
- Improved Mos Eisley in ANH
- Improved Cloud City in TESB
- Improved Sarlaac Pit in ROTJ
- Scene with Biggs and Luke at Yavin (in original, no idea what the hell this "mustache guy" was to Luke)
- Elimination of infamous "Yub Yub" song
Bad things about SE:
- Greedo shoots first
- Jabba/Han scene
- Luke's scream in TESB
- Redone Vader shuttle line/ pointless extra footage
- ROTJ celebration scenes
- Didn't fix Obi-Wan's stick sabre
- No need for extended Slave I chase MF in TESB (in the Avenger's garbage field)
Anyone remember any others?

You didn't like 'yub-yub'?!? I loved that song. Especially with those Ewoks doing a drum thing with stormtrooper helmets ().Vympel wrote:Good things about the SE:

I don't remember the last one. Honestly, I don't remember it. Maybe I have to pull out the SE and re-watch them again (certainly puts less strain on my OT videos). Also what was wrong with the ROTJ celebration scenes? Unless you're talking about the Endor ones, where they should be hauling ass outta there and onto the nearest transport.Bad things about SE:

Yes.Anyone remember any others?
- In ANH they make subtle dialogue changes, such as a line Threepio makes in the DS scene as Artoo is logging onto the network. This is a 'neutral' change, as it does no real good (extraneous dialogue) but may have been done for a good reason (IIRC the impetus for doing the SE for ANH was the actual film needed to be fixed as it was degrading).
- In ESB there was the snow creature. I consider this a bad addition, as it looks completely 'inserted'. Although it gives a 'face' to the Wampa snow creature, the fact it shares no scenes with Luke makes it feel out of place.
- In ESB there's some big 'moon' thing in the asteroid chase scene. That wasn't in the original. Not good or bad, just... weird.
- In ROTJ there's the stupid and pointless dance sequence which should be cut. It also makes Boba a bit of a flirt. I don't mind this, but some people think it doesn't add to the character. Meh.
- In ROTJ they add MonCals in the background during the Endor battle scenes. You have to pause and squint, they're THAT inconspicuous. I mean, if you're going to make a sizable change to a dramatic event why make the change hard to find?

I would have like to have seen more AT-ST footage during the Hoth battle, and more B-Wing footage over Endor. Supposidly the OT lacked these due to stop motion mistakes and matte problems, respectively, so why not use CG to fill in the origional intent?Vympel wrote:Anyone remember any others?
Also, I didn't like Han's new line in ROTJ "I can see a lot better now." That was stupid and pointless.
The most basic assumption about the world is that it does not contradict itself.
Big moon thing? WTF? I´ve never heard of any moon being inserted into this sequence.- In ESB there's some big 'moon' thing in the asteroid chase scene. That wasn't in the original. Not good or bad, just... weird.
Are you talking about the Endor ground battle or space battle? Either way I don´t understand what the hell you´re talking about.- In ROTJ they add MonCals in the background during the Endor battle scenes. You have to pause and squint, they're THAT inconspicuous. I mean, if you're going to make a sizable change to a dramatic event why make the change hard to find?
It´s this shot where the Slave 1 slowly flies past the camera after the Falcon. I think it´s cool.- No need for extended Slave I chase MF in TESB (in the Avenger's garbage field)
