Lego Bionicle (3D Contest [WiP])

Post by salm »

so, i had some freetime and decided to take part in the quarterly modelling contest.

it´s a lego bionicle. Vorahk of the Rahkshi to be precise.
the weapon ist still missing and i don´t know if i want to keep the head. they´re usually equipped with staff weapons but i´m considering giving him hands with fingers so he can wield some type of large assault rifle.

entirely made in 3DS Max
3 days of modelling
43 000 polygons

it´s a stupid geocities accound so you´ll have to copy and past and remove the +++
(perhaps someone with cool webspace could host these images?)

here´s a wireframe. you can´t recognize much, but anyway:

If it's a Lego picture, I don't think www.brickshelf.com would mind hosting it.

almost 60 hits and no comments? :(

anyway, here are two versions of him equipped with weapons.
neither of them is finished yet.
which one do you think is better. the staff or the gun.

i don´t like the original staff weapon he carries. too much little crap on it. so this is a modified version. i´m not really satisfied with it either.

the gun is based on a photoshop job by alyeska. thanks for letting me use it (i asked a couple of weeks ago  )

so which one should i continue. staff or gun?

Forgot to mention up there that those are pretty spiffy. Great, awesome, too cool job on them.

Anyway, I'd say go with the staff. While with the gun looks awesome, it almost seems out of place. Personally, though, I'd use a staff that is closer to the toys since the one it has looks a little plain. But, hey, that's just me. If you don't like the staff, go with the gun. It looks good to.

You know, how do you move the model for the poses? Did you use bones?

no bones. the pivot points of the seperate parts are in the centers of the joints and the parts which are lower in the hirarchy are linked to the the parts higher in the hirarchy (hand to arm, arm to shoulders, shoulders to torso...)

i´ll perhaps need to create a bones system though if i use the staff because the staff connects to two different body parts. because of that it´s not possible to do it with the regular linking method and it´s really a pain in the ass to ajust the staff everytime.

before IK-ing it, i´ll have to map and texture it though. i hate mapping and really suck at texturing.

Ah, I see. Yeah, if you did a staff it would have to be more blade-like, but the blade is kind of plain on your first model. Maybe basing the staff off of another Rahkshi's or taking elements from each if possible. I don't know, I'm just throwing out suggestions. Otherwise go with the rifle.

Put a blade at one end and keep the other unchanged.

Anyway, it's a cool model

3 days for the character without weapons. 3 hours for the gun. 1 hour for the first staff and 2 hours for the second staff. 5 minutes for the texturing. 2 hours for putting him into the poses because it´s a real pain in the ass to move and rotate stuff on my old 800 MHz machine when there are more than 30 000 polys visible. :)

hmm... hard to tell. i´ve been using max for about 2 years very infrequently. mainly for importing architectural and urban design projects i had created in FormZ to make simple animations such as camera flights. then about a year ago i started modelling in max. the real breakthrough was this semester when i took a 3D seminar, so since april i´ve been modelling and animating on a very regular basis. i try to do stuff at least every second day, preferably more often.
