Out of curiousity, do any of you non US residents pay any form of income tax? I'm interested to see how other governments rob, er.. tax, their citizens.
The most basic assumption about the world is that it does not contradict itself.

Most western governments derive a majority of their funding from income taxes, although there are significant variations as to the exact structure of the tax.

Yes, but the poor also spend all or more of their excess money on shit they don't need. You might say that they therefore deserve what they get, but the situation harms society as a whole.
And you could have a surtax on obscenely ostentatious luxury items such as Ferraris.
Those types of taxes hit the lower class workers and middle class owners a lot harder than they hit the rich, because they stop buying them as much.
