Well, that throws off Stargate's theory about it moving to the Pegasus Galaxy.

Atlantis supposedly had high technology.

It makes Family Guy's portrayal of Ireland all the more accurate. It's because of the booze that Atlantis fell. :D

There're just two big problems with this theory.

1. Ireland didn't sink; it's still there, and I'm not sure there's good geological evidence of a huge wave washing over the island at any time.

2. There's never been found even the tiniest shred of archaeological evidence that Ireland was ever home to a civilization more advanced than any other in Europe, at any period in its history.

The article says that the guy's idea about that is that it was based off a shoal that did sink.

Perinquus, I'm sure you're hoping for some fantastic mythological island and all, but did you even read the article?
Erlingsson believes the idea that Atlantis sank came from the fate of Dogger Bank, an isolated shoal in the North Sea, about 60 miles off the northeastern coast of England, which sank after being hit by a huge floodwave around 6,100 BC.

"I suspect that myth came from Ireland and it derives from Dogger Bank. I think the memory of Dogger Bank was probably preserved in Ireland for around 3,000 years and became mixed up with the story of Atlantis," he said
Makes complete sense.

Plato made up Atlantis, in the Critas and Timaeus dialogues. There is not a shred of evidence it existed at all, other than it's appearance in those dialogues.

Though in fairness one Greek explorer probably reached Iceland and went further enough north than that to encounter the icepack--but IIRC he was after Plato's time, and his voyage was never particularly famous, either. (Just like the fact that the Phoenecians--though they almost certainly never reached America--quite possibly circumnavigated Africa.)

I have, actually. Altantis is on the bottom of the Mediterrean and requires a German U-Boat to reach or Nazis will gain the power of Orichalcum and take over the world for the Third Reich!  :D

No doubts about this, but that doesn't equal Altantis. There is also evidence that Greeks may have established colonies on Britain and Ireland in the great disapora that proceded the Greek Dark Ages after the war with Troy, but I've heard no evidence for a Egypt stomping superpower that was beating by Athens despite having a 10 to 1 disadvantage in terms of chariots and hoplites (yes, hoplites).

Don't some Celtic myths put many supposedly "advanced" races on Ireland way before we humans ever landed there? Hmm...

Forgot to add, I don't actually believe in those legends, but maybe there is some relationship.
