I understand the out-of-universe explanation for Sith using red sabers. Red contrasts with blue & green, and it looks cool. Plus it shows you who the bad guys are in a fight without having to think (like the old cowboy cliche of the black hats vs. the white hats).
But remember Luke "cooks" his crystals in heat. Yet his saber doesn't turn out red.
Another "theory" I've heard is that the Sith "infuse" their lightsabers with the "Dark side of the force" [somehow] and this [somehow] makes them turn red. I don't know why they'd do such a thing or if the Jedi also "infuse" their crystals with the Force (and why this somehow leads to blue & green), but who knows.
There just doesn't seem to be a satisfactory in-universe explanation except "this or that group traditionally likes to use that color."

The Sith do direct the formation of their artificial crystals during manufacture with the Dark Side of the Force.

leading to more questions...
And this causes the unique color?
Do the Jedi use the force to "form" their crystals as well?
If one says that Jedi use only "natural" crystals, then why are they two (or three) different colors? How does this apply to the other colors used in the EU by "Dark" and "Light" Jedi?
And does this mean that it's impossible for a non-Sith to create a red lightsaber? Or is this just an "ancient sith secret" that anyone could do if they just knew how. Or does it necessitate using the Dark Side of the Force? (if so, it would be a nice test of whether a person has the Dark Side or not)

Luke made Leia a ruby-red lightsabre.

HE MUST BE A SITH!!!!!
Heh, okay, sorry for that, but I couldn't resist.
This would be a nice thing to have answered, but I guarentee if Lucas answers it backstage nobody will like it or take it seriously, and if it's done onscreen it will seem like a nerd thing and a waste of film time probably... oh well.

I want to be answered in RotS:
- What happened to the Jedi Archive? In the EU there is the Unknown Region. But Yocusta suggested they knew the galaxy completely. (At least, Kamino was beyond the border of the Republic, and it should have been on the maps (as its surroundings were).)
- How the force sensitive infants are collected? Why the mothers allow them to be taken?
- Are the Acclamators crewed by clones? As I know there is a statement that there will be "clone gunners" in RotS space battle.
- Will there be another cloning sources and even technics?

Kurgan,
This is EU material, so please take it as such:
However, I am told that Luke did wierd shiz with crystals (even making Leia a red one). My knowledge is limited to the Old Republic era and not the New. I just like it better. So maybe something changed or Luke discovered something unknown to the old Jedi. I dunno. Draw your own conclusions, I guess.
Also, just FYI, no one "has the Dark Side." The Force is everywhere and in everyone. Some people are simply sensitive to it while other are not. Anybody who is sensitive enough to the Force to manipulate it can feel the hate of the Dark and the calm of the Light...it's just up to them to pick the right one to "use." (In as much as you can really "use" something like the Force.)

Yes. The Dark Side magics and the Sith alchemy involved create red crystals. They do not occur naturally. And this causes the unique color?
No. Alchemy is not something the Jedi endorse. All Jedi crystals are natural.Do the Jedi use the force to "form" their crystals as well?
There are several colors for the same reason that gemstones come in different colors. They aren't necessarily the same type of crystal. Aside from adegan crystals, there are no specifically named lightsaber crystals...they are just called lightsaber crystals. So why are diamonds a different color from rubies? Same reason lightsaber crystals are. And there was only one known planet in the Old Republic where you could get the rarer purple, yellow, and orange crystals: Ruusan. Sadly, Ruusan was almost scoured clean after the last Sith War and the crystals were no longer availible. Windu's purple crystal is an heirloom passed from master to apprentice for nearly 1000 years. If one says that Jedi use only "natural" crystals, then why are they two (or three) different colors? How does this apply to the other colors used in the EU by "Dark" and "Light" Jedi?

I don't see why they were split up. Everytime I try to rationalise it I come up with "they're fucking stupid" to "something must have happened to separate them accidentally." At the same time, the question has to be asked and answered: why didn't Obi-wan raise Luke himself? Why did he entrust his upbringing to Owen Lars?
"There is a great disturbance in the force"
"I have felt it my master"
etc etc
If Luke was trained by Obi-Wan then the emperor would have found out and that would be the end of Obi and Luke. Lars was the also the nearest thing to a relation, besides Vader, remember? given the above it would be natural to put Luke with Lars.
As to splitting the twins up: They cannot be protcted from the empire if things do go pearshaped on Tatooine aka not putting all your eggs in the same basket. Leia being compleatly removed from a force elementalso limits her from being detected.
