Identity of Sidious Reveaeled?

Post by Connor MacLeod »

Or is it an error?

From page 45 of the ITW:SWT book:
ITW:SWT wrote: Bolts of Sith Lightning shoot from Darth Sidious' crooked fingers
The quote in question is referring to the one just above:
ITW:SWT wrote: The Emperor joins the assault on Luke
It is of course describing the selfsame scene in ROTJ where Palpy blasts Luke with his magic lightning.

Holy shit, double personalities! Still, it would be better if they just left him as one of his obscured identities and kept Palpatine as this great evil figure(chants "Palpatine, our Lord.").
I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

I don't see anything wrong with that. I'm pretty sure everybody figured out that Palpatine was Darth Sidious after TPM, to say nothing of AOTC. Darth Sidious did zap Luke on the DSII.
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

I believe that they released a Darth Sidious action figure under the "Unleashed" title sometime last year. The figure's description noted that it was from the ROTJ scene where "Darth Sidious" unleashes his force lightning on Luke. So yeah, it has already been confirmed that Palpatine=Sidious, even by the toys. Come on people, it is blatantly obvious.

Come on dude, you aren't seriously saying that you didn't know Darth Sidious = Palpatine? It's an open secret.

It seems that Palpatine and Sidious are the same person, but I have that faint feeling that it will be revealed that they are two different people in Episode III, since almost everyone is saying that they're the same person, and Darth Sidious finally revealing himself as Palpatine would be too predictable.

I also have a feeling that Lucas may pull a twist with the Sidious/Palpatine identity.

Hopefully not.

The entire sub-plot where Palpatine wins regardless of whether the idiot Queen and her teenage boytoy (sorry - can't stand this part of the movie. Makes me vomit) or Palpatine's puppets end up on top is one of the only decent things about the movie. Loved at the end of the TPM that, even with his plans falling to pieces, he still wins. Ah - I love convincing, power hungry people.

Hopefully Palpatine throws off his veil at some point and lays out how he suckered Amidala and company into helping him. Then he starts tieing up all the lose ends and begins the Jedi pogrom.

He'll have to in order to bring the previous story elements of TPM and AOTC together - as well as tie into the whole title; it is the Revenge of the Sith after all.

Disproven by TPM. theforce.net has a very good article where they compared the balconey scene of Sidious talking to Maul with the first meeting of Palpatine and Amidala, its obvious that the balconey and to a certain extent, the exterior background is the same.

It would be a nice twist if Lucas can pull it off. Sort of like the Luke-Vader twist in ESB.
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.

It would be rather lame, I think, and against the dramatic irony that Lucas has been setting up in the previous two films.

I agree, it would suck. Instead of Palpatine being the sinister plotting mastermind that (I really hope) he is in TPM and AOTC, it turns out to be another guy entirely? I'll pass.

Its a secret at all? The first thing I thought when I saw the Sidious hologram at the beginning to TPM was "Oh look, its Palpatine beginning his Big and Evil Plan (tm)." Its blatantly obvious. :P

My only hope is that Palpatine doesn't reveal his identity to the good guys in some cheesy way...

Palpatine not being Sidius or the Emperor would with out question be the lamest plot development in history, it would like reading LotR to the part where Frodo and Sam are in Orodruin with the Ring, Sam the suddenly grabs the Ring, announces that he is really Sauron in disguise and runs of to Barad-dur while cackling maniacly. I'll swear of SW forever if Lucas does something so stupid.

The problem is that with all the crap GL has pulled in recent years I can almost imagine him doing something like this, all the while convinced that it is stroke of genious and pretending that it was all part of his great machiavellian master plan he originally cooked up in the mid seventies and that this was the way it was supposed to be from the start.

Your disgust with the idea is only matched by the idea's stupidity. It is, IMO, propagated by idiots who haven't been following the behind the scenes chatter of the PT at all. It's a stupid twist, it's been disavowed more than once from practically the top, IIRC. Fucking hell, it's just so STUPID. It probably originated with some dumbass who doesn't even know Ian McDiarmid played the Emperor in ROTJ.

If there's one thing that shits me about Star Wars, its that special category of dumbass fans that thinks up the really dumb fucking ideas for plot developments in the PT and stupid, fanboy-reek changes in the OT (like the ever popular, fucking moronic, Padme in Episodes IV-VI or whatever).

Here's what I don't 'get': If Palpatine and Sidious are the same person, why the identity change? ie Why do we have Palpatine and Darth Sidious? Why is Darth Sidious named at all?

If they're DIFFERENT people, why the fuck are they played by the same fucking actor?

What was GL's intention? I can't remember the commentaries that well, they were mostly GL wanking to CGI or someshit. Does he explain why at all?

I think it's just to throw in that little air of doubt.

Besides, the characters don't know he's the same guy.
