SW fighter analogues?

Post by phongn »

I was bored and we haven't had one of these threads in awhile.

Y-Wing: F-105 Thunderchief
X-Wing: F-4 Phantom II
E-Wing: F-15 Eagle
A-Wing: F-104 Starfighter
K-Wing: A-6 Intruder
B-Wing: No precise analog, it lifts loads and has guns

Could B-Wing:A-10 be correct.

The K-Wing is the A-10, or the closest you get.

I know its not precise, but I'd think the A-wing would be something just a tad faster than the F-104. I'd almost say F-22, but that'd put it above the E-wing.

As for B-wing, I'd put the A-10 as the closest analogue, though the Warthog is closer to the K-wing.

I always thought that Star Wars fighters were analogous to World War II fighters and jet fighters from the immediate postwar era.

ETO:

X-Wing: P-51 Mustang (Good all-round fighter)
Y-Wing: P-40 Warhawk (slower, less maneuverable but very rugged)
A-Wing: P-80 Shooting Star (finicky and unreliable, but extremely fast)
B-Wing: B-25 Mitchell (heavy, powerful, long-range attack bomber)
TIE Fighter: Bf-109
TIE Interceptor: FW-190

PTO:

Z-95 Headhunter: F4F Hellcat (almost a Hellcat/X-Wing but not quite there)
X-Wing: F6F Hellcat
Y-Wing: TBF/TBM Avenger
A-Wing: FJ/F-1 Fury
B-Wing: F7F Tigercat (heavy powerful interceptor-bomber)
TIE Fighter: A6M Zero
TIE Interceptor: MiG-15 Fagot

The Y-Wing is the one-dimensional, slow lumbering bomber with a defensive turret.

The B-Wing is a strike aircraft, its quick and can hold its own against other fighters while carrying a wallop for attack.

The B-Wing is not the B-25.

The Bwing would be more like a F15 E strike eagle. For a WWII comparison, maybe a Lightning?.?.?.

Y-wing:P-38 Lightening...You can't tell me the Y-wing wasn't inspired by the P-38...nose-mounted guns and the twin engine tail?
X-wing:F4U Corsair
B-wing:P-47 Thunderbolt
A-wing:P-51 Mustang or a Spitfire (can't think of a faster Allied prop fighter)
Millinium Falcon: A-26 (It had a speed comparable to most fighters at the time.
Z-95:P-40 Warhawk

TIE fighter:A6M Zero:Fast, manueverable, but easy to shoot down.
TIE bomber:ME-110 or He-111
TIE Interceptor :Me-109
TIE Avenger/Advanced: FW-190

I thought Z-95:F2A and T-65:F4F would have been a bit better ;) Superficially the F2A does resemble later Grumman fighters.

B-wing= Typhoon or Mosquito. Relatively heavily armoured for a fighter craft, heavy armamanent of cannon and rockets, deadly to fighters, ships and tanks.

I think the X-Wing should be equivalent to a F-14 or F-15 since it outclasses many other fighters.

Z-95: Curtiss Hawk 75. The old war dog that kept on soldiering far in to obsolescence, know for being robust and reliable, much loved by it's pilot's. Saw much service in less in less wealthy parts of the world/galaxy.

X-Wing: Curtiss P-40 Warhawk. Successor to the Hawk, tough, hard-hitting plane known for being robust and reliable, just like its older brother. Did more then it's fair share of the fighting early in the conflict.

Y-Wing: Hawker Hurricane. Less capable then newer fighters but provided invaluable service and still earned it's keep as a fighter/bomber later in life.

B-Wing: Hawker Typhoon/Tempest. Never really lived out to it's expectations, but served with honour in spite of that.

A-Wing: Vought F4U Corsair. Finicky piece of equipment often kept in service with impromptu repairs, hated passionately by ground crews, but lethal in the air.

I though of camparing Z-95 and X-Wing to Wildcat and Hellcat, but Z-95 never saw much combat with the Rebellion, where as the Wildcat was the most important carrier fighter the US had early in the war, so I went with the Hawk/Warhawk line instead. Besides Hawk and Warhawk are my two favourite US fighters of the WW2 era.

Personally, I think the B-Wing would be similiar to the A-26 Invader or the P-61 Black Widow.

Here's my take at it:

Z-95: Hawk 75 (see Sir Sirius for reasons)

X-Wing: P-40 Warhawk (ditto)

Y-Wing: Either P-38 Lightning (center gun, two-engine layout) or P-61 Black Widow (center guns, two engines, dorsal turret)

A-Wing: P-51 Mustang. Quick, usually agile, but doesn't carry much besides the guns.

B-Wing: P-47 Thunderbolt. Rugged, guns everywhere, and about the largest fighter one can imagine (at the time)

TIE Fighter: Bf 109. They're everywhere, and they're decent, though outmatched by late aircraft.

TIE Bomber: Me 110 Zerstorer. Slow, somewhat rugged, more an attack vehicle than anything else.

(from the games):

TIE Interceptor: FW 190. Faster, better gunned, and more maneuverable than the T/F-Bf 109, but not much tougher.

TIE Advanced: Me 262 Schwalbe. Fast, high powered, but a bit temperamental.

Missile Boat: No great analog. Me 163 Komet, maybe? Insanely fast for a short while, few guns, some rockets, and about as tough as an eggshell (well, except for the last, it does fit).

If you chose the F7F Tigercat for the B-Wing, wouldn't the F8F Bearcat be a better choice for the A-Wing?

I head out of Lucas's own mouth that he used ww2 films for his dogfight scenes. What were the fighters involved in the dogfights he used

here's how I always thought of it:

X-Wing: F-15C Eagle
A-Wing: F-16 Falcon
Y-Wing: F-4 Phantom
B-Wing: A-10 ThunderboltII

or if you wanna go navy,

X-Wing: F-18 Hornet
A-Wing: A-4 Skyhawk
Y-Wing: F-8 Crusader
B-Wing: A-6 Intruder

B-wing choices ar tough, we don't quite have a proper analogue of a heavy anti-ship strike fighter.

Ok, late in replying, but never the less -

E-Wing: F-22 Raptor
X-Wing: F-15 Eagle
Xj-Wing: F-35 JSF

All I can think of for now.

Now, what I'm curious about - what would be the SW equivalent of an Apache?

Z-95 - I-16 - both are obsolete
X-Wing - P-38 - both are good multirole crafts
Y-Wing - P-39 - not bad if you know how to fly it
B-Wing - IL2 or P-47 - tough - lots of guns and warheads
A-Wing - Tempest - both are fast
E-Wing - F8F Bearcat - great fighter - arrived to late
K-Wing B-26 - both are terriffing ground pounders

Tie-Fighter - Zero excellent dog fighter - outclassed by more advanced crafts
Tie-Interceptor - Bf109 good but not so durable fighters
Tie-Bomber - Ju87 both are good bomber and both are dead meat without air/space supperiority
Tie-Advanded - TA-152 great fighters outclasses most enemy fighters
Missileboat - H0229 - only prototype available
Gunboat - He219 - nasty heavy fighters
Tie-Defender - Do335 - only a few of them were finished before the war end
