Atlantis was probably Ireland.

I thought the so-called experts had found what they think is Atlantis somewhere in the Mediterranean sea? The location they have fits all the details given by Greeks and Egyptians and has ruins and pottery from an ancient Greek society.

Oh, it may well have been real, but not in the mythical 'Arthurian' way its been presented as in history. Remember that Troy was once myth and was rediscoverd based on Homer's account in the Iliad.Sea Skimmer wrote:Atlantis was probably imaginary.

Yes, they were called the Tuatha de Danann (pronounced TOO-ah-ha day DONN-ann), meaning People of Danu - Danu being a goddess. According to Irish mythology, they inhabited the island before it was invaded and conquered by the Milesian Celts from Iberia (modern Spain). After the Milesians defeated the Tuatha de Danann, the Milesians took control of the land, and the de Danann retreated underground, using their magic to create fair realms that were as light and airy as outdoors, and such were their powers that the Milesians came to worship them as gods. (How the Milesians ever managed to defeat beings of such awesome power I have never been able to fathom, but there you are.)GoldenFalcon wrote:Forgot to add, I don't actually believe in those legends, but maybe there is some relationship.GoldenFalcon wrote:Don't some Celtic myths put many supposedly "advanced" races on Ireland way before we humans ever landed there? Hmm...
But this is just legend. If there was an Atlantis, and it did somehow comprise a landmass adjacent to Ireland, and it was home to an advanced (for that time) civilization, it is really inconceivable that such a civilzation no artifacts of any kind, ever, on land so near to their home as Ireland would have been.
There are lots of sinkage-into-the-sea spots around the world, and, in my opinion, it was likely just coincidence that he partially described Ireland.

So, let me get this straight; people in Ireland remembered Dogger Bank sinking, so that = Atlantis?
Bullshit, and less likely than Thera, which in itself seriously lacks most of the ingredients to pin Atlantis on it.
Give me Athenians at Dogger Bank circa 9000 BC; fuck, give me Athenians at 9000 BC PERIOD and you'll have an Atlantis believer; but until there's better evidence than yet another island catastrophe to hammer into Atlantis' shape, you can call me a soulless unbeliever.

This is true theres a line where Plato says outright that the story of atlantis is a parabal, that line is of coarse ignored by many (I've even seen translations where the line is removed entirly) On the other hand he could have heard of Ireland from someone who'd been there and used it as a model for the geography.Gil Hamilton wrote:Plato made up Atlantis, in the Critas and Timaeus dialogues. There is not a shred of evidence it existed at all, other than it's appearance in those dialogues.

Islands sink. Rivers flood. Cities go bye-bye in a great variety of ways. That doesn't mean that a tiny amount of at best circumstantial evidence proves ancient overblown legends and myths.

Everyone knows that Atlantis was discovered twice by Richard Dean Anderson
But seriously, why am I suddenly thinking that the Atlantis myth, the Great Flood myth and the end of the last Ice Age are somehow linked?

There's a lot of talk now that the Great Flood myth was from a many-times retold legend dating back to the end of the last Ice Age when the Black Sea flooded to its current level. It had previously been a much smaller freshwater lake until the rising sea levels made the tiny dam where the Bosporus is now burst, forcing the people who lived in the area to flee. Naturally a lot of them went south to what became known as Mesopotamia, and the story changed over the thousands of years that it was retold, and they told the story to some ancient shepherd tribe which became known as the Hebrews, and you know the rest of the story.
Where Atlantis would fit in there I don't really know.

I know what you're saying, but I have a problem imagining oral traditions surviving that long. At least, not in as dynamic an enviroment as Europe. Australia, South Africa, sure: I've read that Aborigine and San traditions are tens of thousands of years old.Dalton wrote:I'm not suggesting that they're real...but most myths have a grain of truth in them, and I have a very warped mind.
But Europe has been repopulated, conquered, and amalgamated so many times that I doubt there's a trace of any languages dating to the ice age to be found today, much less stories...no matter how distorted. And languages die hard.

I don't know. I think there might be possibilities there, threads of truth, and the biggest mixed-up tangle of myths and stories in history. To me, a lot of really funky stuff went on during the history of human civilization and I like to try to make sense of it since I'm pretty sure it wasn't the intentional meddling of the Vorlons or Goa'uldFrank Hipper wrote:I know what you're saying, but I have a problem imagining oral traditions surviving that long.
