MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - An unabashed racist will represent the Republican party in the November election for a congressional seat after a write-in candidate failed to derail his effort.
With 86 percent of the primary vote counted Thursday, write-in candidate Dennis Bertrand had just 1,554 votes compared to 7,671, or 83 percent, for James L. Hart, a believer in the discredited, phony science of eugenics.
In November, the GOP candidate will oppose Rep. John Tanner, a Democrat who has represented the northwest Tennessee district for 15 years.
Hart, 60, vows if elected to work toward keeping ``less favored races'' from reproducing or immigrating to the United States. In campaign literature, Hart contends that ``poverty genes'' threaten to turn the United States into ``one big Detroit.''
While campaigning, Hart sometimes wears a protective vest and carries a .40-caliber pistol, but he said he has run into no trouble.
``When I knock on a door and say white children deserve the same rights as everybody else, the enthusiastic response is truly amazing,'' he said.
If a black person opens the door, he says he simply drops off campaign literature and leaves.
What a fucking worthless jizz bag. And the fact that thousands of people voted for him. Ugh, completely disgusting. I hate rural America, and I know exactly the types that would vote for this douche licker in the small town I grew up in.
But, I'd imagine that the Democrat that has held the seat for 15 years probably won't lose to this guy. But, I still find it awful that he could get 7,000+ votes.

It's not as bad as it looks. Here's the likely sequence of events:
1. The Republicans decide not to contest the seat. A 15 year incumbent has already been elected 8 times. The way Congress is today, incumbents, especially longtime incumbents, win more than 90% of the time.
2. This opens the door for all the whack-a-loons to come out of the woodwork. In the United States, you can join a party merely by registering to vote as a member, and anybody who wants can run for Congress. This slimebag manaed to get enough signatures from other registered Republicans on a petition to get on the primary ballot, not a terribly difficult task to judge by the number of loonies who show up on the ballot in MY district. Since the Republicans weren't contesting the seat, he was alone on it.
3. On primary day, 8000 people (all of about 1.5% of the population of a congressional district, by the way) turn out to vote in a Republican primary that's gotten zero attention from the national party, the state party, or the local parties. Most of the voters have probably never heard of this guy, but they've come out to do their duty and vote for the only guy on the ballot, except for the 1000 who know who this guy is and vote for the write-in.
4. Douchebag gets pasted in the general election.
This is how people who believe in eugenics get nominated by major parties. Doubtless if you dug around, you could find a Democrat somewhere running on a "Stalin was a great man" platform who got nominated the same way.

Republican party decided not to contest what is basically a garuneteed Democratic district. Shit bag mentioned successfully manages to grab enough signatures to be able to get on the ballot. He's now the only person listed on the ballot. Ergo, he wins the primary.
Also, please note: the Republican Party doesn't toss people out of it's party.

Actually, I don't think either party CAN. Thank the Democrats for that. In the early 20th century, they tried to exclude blacks from the party, because in the South at the time, the Democratic primary basically WAS the election. If a Republican ran at all, he'd get crushed every time. SCOTUS ended up ruling that political parties aren't private clubs because of the nature of the political process and can't exclude people.

This is a damned shame. The House of Representatives was supposed to be the citizens' house, and yet the way things are structured these days, it has far more careerism and safe seats than the Senate.

That's because it's impossible to gerrymander a Senator's district. If I had my druthers, I'd pass a Constitutional amendment that required the states to find some non-partisan body to control reapportionment (NON partisan, not BI partisan, because the parties are perfectly capable of cooperating to create safe seats).

I don't consider that necessarily a bad thing. The 17th Amendment opened up the senate to popular influence it wasn't supposed to suffer from, and it seems that the system has in a sense self-corrected by turning the House into the largely nonrepresentative body.

This is how Lyndon LaRouche cultists used to get on the ballot. Back in 1986, they managed to fuck over the entire Illinois Democratic ticket by getting on the ballot. Adlai Stevenson III quit the ticket rather than run with assholes like that. Let's see if anyone on the Tennessee ticket has similar backbone.

We could include a clause repealing the 17th in the Anti-Gerrymandering amendment.

If the HR had become the house that represents the States that might mean something, but unfortunately because of the way gerrymandering works, it's the house that represents whichever Party is in power at the moment the lines are redrawn.

Update: in an interview on NPR today, the candidate admitted he didn't even expect to win the nomination, and the reason he won over 80% of the vote was because nobody tried to challenge him until it was too late to get onto the ballot. He got signatures for his ballot petition by going door to door asking "Do you believe white children should have equal rights" and not mentioning his position on eugenics.
Also, the Tennessee Republican Party has urged all Republicans in the 8th district to vote for the Democrat.

While this does indicate that the people who supported him don't necessarily support his platform, you still have to wonder why anyone would hear a question like that and not suspect that the person has an agenda. I know that whenever I hear people talking about "equal rights for whites" and selling this whole "whites are so downtrodden" line, they're usually using it as a springboard to a general white vs black antagonist argument.

You'd be surprised. Most regular white folks aren't familiar with racist rhetorical tactics anymore, and this guy could have easily used that line as an introduction to an anti-affirmative action, anti-welfare platform that many whites (and more than a few blacks) would support (though admittedly, you wouldn't approach a black voter with that line, since I imagine most minorities are QUITE familiar with what "Do you support equal rights for white children?" really means.

As the Tennessee 8th Congressional district is, IIRC, about 65% black, I somehow doubt it. And seeing as it's a district where a Democrat has won the last 7 elections, will win the upcoming one, and when he retires, another Democrat will win, I'd say it's a gerrymandered "safe" district which actually serves to illustrate that at least when it comes to Congress, every vote doesn't count. If this was a district actually in contention, for sure the GOP wouldn't have allowed a racist (and a Marxist, it turns out) represent the party.
