Contraceptives...and Incest

A conversation with a friend brought up something that an English teacher we had once said. This teacher made an interesting statement, and it goes something like this;

"In this day and age of modern contraceptives, I feel that the age old taboo of incest should be reassessed. The reason incest is disallowed is that it leads to inbreeding which is damaging to the genetic makeup of our race. However with modern contraceptives this is no longer the case, we can now have sex without risking unwanted pregnancies, and since this eliminates inbreeding, I see no reason why we can't have sex with our cousins or other family members. After all, we're just having sex for fun now, why should an age old law get in the way?"

At the time the class was like "this guy's a fuckin' sicko!", and the perversion provided for many stories later on. Anyways, what do you guys think of it?

Your teacher got a very good point though. Ignoring morality, incest is not widely practiced because it leads to inbreeding, which hurts survival chances. The existence of contraceptives removes this threat, thus allowing incest to be practiced in safety. So the main sticking point regarding incest is society's morality. Human, not nature, must make this decision now since we have separated sex from reproduction.

From what you wrote, I don't think the English teacher is a pervert. He brought up a really valid point, and the only thing remotely "sick" about it was that he talked about a society taboo. Perhaps you should start some kind of debate on this in school? It would be quite interesting and perhaps even piss off some people(

).

actually, he´s quite right. i cant imagine finding it attractive to have sex with a relative, but if 2 siblings want to fuck each others brains out... why not?

That's sick. Bestiality, necrophilia and pedophilia (not all pedophiles are child molestors) don't hurt our species' chances of survival. Does that make them ok? Now I don't believe sexual deviants should be persecuted in any way, but some things are just plain wrong.

I agree with Salm here....I don't find it attracting for many reasons, but your teacher has a point....if dteps are taken to prevent pregnancy and whatnot, and the participants are willing to...participate...then I am not one to judge. That's thei decision, not mine.

Incest differs a lot from pedophilia. Many modern societies rule it as unjust because young children either can't think for themselves or give in to pressure too easily. They haven't had time to choose a morality or too weak to defend themselves.

Incest(not including rape or statutory rape), however, usually involves consenting adults. And that's the part we need to look at: whether consenting adults should have to right to have sex despite their blood relations.

Legally they do...and it's only repeated birthing due to incest that detracts from the healthiness of the baby, not the act in general. ONe birth from an incest relationshiop will not necesarily cause loadsa of defects.

Isn't Incest also bad from a psychological standpoint since it screws with one's sense of personal idendity in relatio to the family or something like that? I think there's more reasons than simply having children.

Also, condoms & birth control are still not 100% effective, and any benefit you (you being the incestuous fucker) feel may result from the incest cannot outweigh the possibility, however slight, of bringing an inbred child into the world.

I've had a few years to think over what this teacher said in high school, and in hindsight I have to thank him for opening my eyes to many things. On the incest issue I generally find myself in agreement, assuming it's between 2 consenting adults. If it's fun and they want to do it, I can't see a good reason not to despite the fact that it's illegal and taboo in our society. It's not something I'd want to do, but I that's just me. If you think about it, it wasn't all that long ago that gay sex was in the same category, and now it's something that's become accepted in the most part in our society.

On a sidenote this teacher found sexual meanings in everything, much like the members of this board, and he had us watch Equus, which was rather disturbing at the time.
