1000 pound man losing it

Post by Master of Ossus »

Something about this just seems funny.
CNN wrote:SIOUX FALLS, South Dakota (AP) -- A man who once weighed more than half a ton has lost 321 pounds under the care of a team of doctors and hopes to lose 450 pounds more.

Patrick Deuel, 42, of Valentine, Nebraska, weighed 1,072 pounds when he was admitted to Sioux Falls' Avera McKennan Hospital eight weeks ago. Deuel, who is just under 6 feet tall, is on a 1,200 calorie-a-day diet.

"If we hadn't gotten him here, he'd be dead now," said Fred Harris, Deuel's lead doctor.

The former restaurant manager has been bedridden since last fall. He has battled heart failure, thyroid problems, diabetes, pulmonary hypertension and arthritis, and needed help just to roll over in bed.

"Until recently, I wasn't able to see any light at the end of the tunnel," he said Monday from his hospital bed.

A group known as the League of Human Dignity helped arrange for Deuel to be driven to a local livestock scale, where he could be weighed.

According to the Guinness World Records Web site, the record for heaviest man in the world is 1,397 pounds, held by Jon Brower Minnoch of Bainbridge, Washington, who died in 1983.

Deuel, who has battled weight problems all his life and blames his condition in part on genetics, said it took months to find a hospital. Hospitals closer to his home balked at admitting him, he said.

"I got scared because I couldn't help him anymore, and I didn't know who would help him," said his wife, Edith.

Harris said Deuel's care could cost millions of dollars, much of which the hospital may have to cover. Officials found a special ambulance, and hospital workers joined two beds to accommodate Deuel.

One of Deuel's goals is to walk out of the hospital. He also wants to go to a Nebraska Cornhuskers football game, and just take a walk with his wife.

"Even though he's faced negativity all these years, he's not a negative person," Edith Deuel said. "He's almost always been able to stay bubbly and make jokes and be happy."
I bolded my favorite part.

While I think that's funny, though, with all the obesity talks we've had recently, this is both frightening and oddly reassuring. I think it's great that he's managing to lose weight, and I hope that he manages to keep it off and get healthy. At the same time, though, I'm terrified that someone could weigh that much in the first place, despite all of the health complications it's caused him.

You know what bugs me? I started worrying about my weight when I gained 30 pounds my Sophomore year. This man was over a thousand and THEN he started worrying? I don't get it.

I think obese people are an important part of society because they make us feel thin and healthy.

If he needed help rolling out of bed, how was he even able to get food in the first place? Someone else must have been getting the food to him, and why were they still feeding him the thousands of calories it must have taken to get him to a thousand pounds?

Can that sucker even move on his own power? If he can move, then isn't he one of the Premier Weightlifters of the Earth? Sure, it is just moving himself, but moving half a ton is no mean feat.

Is it possible that he suffers from an unusually slow metabolism?

I don't care how slow his metabolism is, it won't allow him to overcome Conservation of Mass. At some point, he ate enough fucking food to accumulate that much body mass, and there's no way to escape that fact. While some people may be blessed with the ability to eat copious amounts of food without gaining weight, that doesn't mean those who aren't are somehow cursed to magically gain weight no matter how much they eat; it only means they don't get to cheat.

It's possible, but speaking as one who is morbidly obese myself, it's more likely that its mental conditioning that drove him to eat like that.

In my case, I grew up eating out of a Chef Boyardee Lasagna can after my parents divorce while my Mom worked 16 hour shifts to keep a roof over our heads.

At a very (5 or so) young age, I learned to equate food with comfort from the stress of my parents divorce.

If I'd been 10 years older, it might have been drugs.

Also, when he drops to a more manageable weight of 350-400 or so (so the shock of the surgery won't kill him), I'll bet his doctors strongly encourage him to have a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.

He almost certainly does, but I still have trouble feeling too much sympathy for people like this because I just don't understand the mindset where someone can't move on their own power, yet make no effort to diet or to try and improve their health. I feel bad for the guy because he's suffering, but I can't figure out how someone can be four or five hundred pounds overweight and not realize that there's a problem.

That must have been his wife, and I have no idea what sort of thought process would allow someone to feed one of their loved ones thousands of calories a day when they were so overweight as to be totally bedridden. At least she eventually got him to the hospital, but I just can't see a reasonable person doing that to anyone else.

That's friggin' horrendous. My boyfriend gained 40 pounds and I jumped right on him (well, you know what I mean). This woman had to be feeding him. Unless the husband was controlling/abusive and made her. Who knows? Weight gain that horrific is completely self-inflicted; I have to agree with Wong. My boyfriend has a slow metabolism; he just eats less than some do. He's not 1000 pounds. So really, as far as I'm concerned, there's no damn excuse.

But the article did mention that he blamed genetics "in part." I take that as the other part was because he shoveled all the shit in his mouth.

Reminds me of a story one of my friends who is currently in med school in Houston told me.

They brought in this guy who must have been at least 500 lbs for I believe a CT scan. But he was so big, he wouldn't fit through the machine. So they called around all the other medical centers in Texas looking for anyone who had one large enough to "accomodate" him. They finally found one in San Antonio that would work but the people in S.A. said he probably wouldn't want to use it. When asked "why not" they told him because of what it was usually used for. Turns out it was at Sea World. It was Shamoo's CT machine.
