NJ Ferry Security tries to confiscate RPG book

Post by Rogue 9 »

Not sure if this belongs here or in N&P. Move it if necessary.

Link.

Intriguing, I must say.

I think I'll kick this up a forum, I think a lot of the people that dont spend time down here in G&C might have a thing or two to say about this.

Bothered About Dungeons & Dragons. Organization started by Patricia Pulling in 1983 after her son's suicide, an event which she blamed on his school's English teacher playing D&D with the honor students.

The group is all but gone now; Mrs. Pulling died in 1998 of cancer and her organization died with her.

Also, she was a nonobservant Jew, not a Christian fundamentalist.

See here for an exhaustive report on the organization and the woman leading it. Michael Stackpole apparently went to great effort to debunk her lunacy in the late 80s; he wrote this in 1990 and it comes to 41 printed pages.

When I clicked on this I thought you were referring to a rocket-propelled grenade book and even then I would consider its confiscation wildly inappropriate.

Does it say what the book was? I didn't see it in the article.

Does it particularly matter? What book is it neccesary to confiscate for peoples safety on a ferry?

I was expecting the book to be something like the the two D20 books on weapons, Weapons Locker and Ultramodern Firearms, but this.... :)

it was white wolf's Exalted: The Abyssals. either way it's hardly something that should warrant confiscation.

I know, I was just wondering if it was one of the books I have, but I don't play WW.

This is funny. I play D&D, whitewolf as well as a few others but this is really funny. I say this because my school funds a gaming club which buys these books. I don't play in the club because i don't care much for the other members, but there is nothing in those books which is dangerous. I guess they excpect you to suddenly pull out your mock up sword and attack everyone thinking they're orcs or something.

Most RPG books are like, what, twenty or thirty bucks? I think the security guard thought he could just 'confiscate' the book for himself.

Unless it was Valar Projects book of Erotic Fantasy (which I myself found rather tame), I can see how you can ID a RPG book unless you know about them.
I've been asked why I still follow a few of the people I know on Facebook with 'interesting political habits and view points'.

It's so when they comment on or approve of something, I know what pages to block/what not to vote for.

Read the link I provided to the Pulling Report. Patricia Pulling held seminars for police officers in the 80s, "educating" them on the dangers that the players of role playing games represent to society. If he has been on the force long enough to have attended one of those (and did so), he would have been instructed to keep a close eye on any gamer (and on how to identify gamers, i.e. he would have been told how to recognize the books) and make an arrest if they showed the slightest sign of potentially dangerous/illegal behavior.

Legally it isnt in their power to 'confiscate' anything without due process. Or in other words, all anyone would have to say when tol that a book needs to be taken is "I assert my fourth amendment rights against unreasonable seizures of personal property"

The hard part, of course, is avoiding saying something along the lines of 'Hands off my property, you monkeyfuck bastard.' or some such. On a more serious note, it's nice to see someone who knows how to use the ACLU as a boomstick when necessary, if I had a cell phone I'd have their number on it as well, after reading that. Bloody twerp of a jumped-up excuse for a security guard. I'd love to have a video camera the first time he searches a bag and finds the Koran in it.
