Say your in a 4*100m relay event and in your 100m you break the 100m world record would it get logged as breaking the world record or is it only the final time that is important?

IIRC the time of the first person in the relay can count because in theory they have essentially a pure 100m time. The individual times for the rest of the people in the relay won't count towards and individula WR.

Actually, why am I attempting to answer this? We should be asking one of the Canadian Swimmer Chicks that pop in here from time to time. :D

I imagine that it's only the final time.

If you're talking about track-and-field, then your individual time shouldn't matter at all, because you get the advantage of being able to accelerate through the zone in order to take the baton.

In swimming, only the leadoff gets an individual time. The others are using a rolling start...

Bingo, only the leadoff swimmer can apply for a record time under FINA rules.
SW 12.8 The first swimmer in a relay may apply for a World Record. Should the first swimmer in a relay team complete his distance in record time in accordance with the provisions of this subsection, his performance shall not be nullified by any subsequent disqualification of his relay team for violations occurring after his distance has been completed.

Which means the only records which can be set in relay swimming are for the backstroke (medley relays) and freestyle (freestyle relays), and of course the relay itself.

I don't think statistics have been released for Athens yet, they are expecting that number though. For the last few Olympics:

http://www.cnn.com/2000/ASIANOW/austral ... ympics.01/
Sydney. Though the offical figure according to the Sydney 2000 opening ceromony DVD was 3.7 Billion.

Atlanta IIRC was about 3-3.5 billion. I know they can hardly count EVERYONE around the world who is sitting in front of a TV, they generaly use rattings technology from various countries around the world, then extrapolate for each country, then add it all together. There are plenty of sources refrencing the 4 billion number and as yet I can't find any source debunking it thus far.

As far as the 400m and 1600m relays are concerned in track, you don't get individual times for your leg. In all relays, there is an exchange zone in which you have to pass the baton. Your leg time starts as soon as you recieve the baton, and that may very depending on where you get the baton during the exchange. Typically, the anchor runs the farthest compared to everyone else on the relay team.

Given that the population of the world is only six billion, I'd be real surprised if there were EVER four billion people awake and not working at any one time, much less all watching the same thing on TV.

I watched a little bit this weekend. My buddy has 60" HD TV so we are seeing some pretty good coverage. The NBC HD broadcast is so much better than that standard shows. I don't mind the occasional atheletes story but there are far too many of them.

The men's beach volleyball game between Australia and USA was pretty exciting today.

Well 4 billion people may not have watched it but the broadcasts were probobly available to four billion people if they chose to watch it.

The more I think about this, the more insane it seems. Four billion? Maybe if they're broadcasting on fucking Coruscant.

Really, did anyone notice all of human civilization grinding to a halt as two-thirds of the planetary population stopped to watch television? No? Me either.

I definitely call bullshit on these numbers.

Too bad MSNBC disagrees with you. Here's a hint: just because you can't envision something with that microscopic brain of yours does not mean it does not exist.

You can link to all the little fluff pieces on the opening ceremony that you want. All they do is briefly repeat the figure they were given, which someone no doubt pulled out of their ass. If you want to make any headway then show me the articles describing empty streets, abandoned marketplaces, and temporary worldwide economic shutdown as TWO-THIRDS OF EVERYONE ON EARTH STOPPED WHAT THEY WERE DOING TO GO WATCH THE OLYMPICS. Four billion people would be pretty much every waking human being in the fucking world.

BTW, next time try putting forth a coherent rebuttal, as opposed to posting 400 different citations of the same bullshit figure and making piss-poor insults. Stupid fuck.

some people need to learn the difference between "watched" and "watched at least a part of". Heck i watched "at least a part of" the simple life before i realized it was shit. As for the opening cerimonies i find it very hard to belive that 4 billion people sat for 3 hours and watched athletes walk around in circles while white spray painted Greeks danced on clow in the dark cubes. The only reason i say any of it was because the sports bar i was at on friday had it on shitty little tv in the corner while we watched the Red Sox and Patriots game son the big screens.
