Mine too; I didn't bother attending my high school graduation ceremony. It seemed ridiculous to me to surround the awarding of such a trivial "honour" with such pomp and circumstance.

Ooooh, you managed to graduate from a system which is designed to let people with 80 IQs pass! Fucking CELEBRATE!!!

For me it was worth celebrating, not because the achievement was noteworthy, but because I would never have to go back to that awful place again.

And what's so bad about this? I think this is a good idea. It isn't religiously specific so you shouldn't piss and moan about this. Allows an individual a chance to pray or meditate on whatever's on his/her mind.

I always did pray in school--before a test. Quietly. It was one of the things I did to prepare. No one told me what I could or couldn't think. THAT is MY right. That is everyone's right.
While prayer is your right, a moment of silence was found to be unconstitutional because anyone who looks at it even briefly can tell it is just people trying to find a loophole. In fact, it was found unconstitutional in the 1980s.

If you've been allowed to attend the graduation ceremony, they've already awarded you the diploma, and AFAIK, they cannot rescind the diploma based on conduct at the graduation. But they can kick you out of the ceremony itself.
I get myy real diploma at graduation. Mesa Public Schools is one of the few discricts that still does that.

I got my real diploma at graduation as well.
They think they have the right to let <snip cynicism> the students pray?
Erm, Einy?
United States Constitution, First Amendment wrote:Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

They have zero right to stop a student from praying if he so chooses; the corollary is that they not only have the right to allow students to pray, but they have to let students pray. Its when they start sponsoring said prayer/require participation that they're breaking the law. If I was in school and decided to pray silently, leading no one else and making no announcement that I was praying, and the thought police burst in and hauled me away saying that I am not allowed to pray in school even though I was merely practicing my religion, not establishing it, I would raise pure hell. A school sponsoring prayer breaks the Establishment Clause, but one banning it entirely among the student body prohibits the free exercise thereof, guaranteed directly after the Establishment Clause. Can't do that.

Graduations are for the parents. I didn't want to go to my college one, but I did it because my parents wanted to see it.

Sitting for 1-2 hours in a black gown while listening to several near-identical speeches give a hand job to a shitty system is not my idea of a party.

I remembered my graduation. It stank. I was in my gown. After that, I had to go to the party in a fucking suit. I hate suits (which brings up the question I'd have to solve when I go to work for good), and personally see little reason as to why they are necessary for that party that's supposed to congratulate you for getting all of "basic" education.

I couldn't have invited relatives I'd not seen in years to a graduation party to give me money if I didn't go through the ceremony.

Also, the ceremony ended up being pretty funny when the retarded families started screaming for their kids like they'd just won the Nobel Prize. There's really nothing funnier than watching somebody's fat mom run from rent-a-cops after screaming incoherently for their kid.

It took you 12 years to get through high school? Most of us do it in 4. But that certainly explains a lot.

How the hell am I supposed to know that's how your graduation went, exactly? I didn't get relatives attend a party, and nobody I know get stuck with a clause like that. The ceremony itself sucks and that is what I am referring to.

Sorry about the 12 years of highschool, though. :P

You didn't get money from every relative you could scrounge up? Wasted opportunity.

You didn't even get any drunk moms getting chased by the security?

Damn. Your graduation really did suck.

People who elevate high school graduation to an important event in their lives need to get a life.

Well at least for me at the time I thought high school graduation might possibly be my one and only graduation. I struggled throughout most of high school, and even during my senior year, in which I made my best grades, I still managed to almost fail the one class left that was required to complete. I knew at the time I was going to college, but I was pretty pessimistic that I would make it another four years, especially four years that weren't going to be free. From where I was standing it looked like HS graduation might be one of the most important events I was going to get. Still, except for a quite dinner with the family afterwards, I didn't do any celebrating. I went on stage, got my diploma, did the photo op, said quick goodbyes to my few friends, and breathed a sigh of relief that those particular 13 years were over.

I got cards and cash in the mail, but it didn't have a damn thing to do with the ceremony itself, which is what I was referring to.

My brother's had a woman arguing with a cop about disrupting the graduates by going over to her daughter and giving her balloons and flowers, but neither that nor your example would get me to call it a 'party'. If anything like that happened at mine, I wouldn't be able to see it or listen to it.

The ceremony is dull, and trying to call it a party is just absurd.

Maybe being in band and having to go to the ceremony all three years before I graduated gave me an appreciation for how funny trashy audience parents can be.

Oh please. I played at graduation for four fucking years (8th-11th grade) and all the stupid screaming parents convinced me of was that the genepool needs chlorine. I enjoyed the after-graduation band party more than the actual graduation ceremony, and all we did at that party was eat pizza and hot wings, and that's counting my own graduation.

I had to give one of those speeches my senior year, so I couldn't skip the damn thing. But I at least stuck two really nasty jabs at the school into the speech (nobody noticed) and, unlike every other fucking speech I'd ever heard at one of these ceremonies, I didn't ONCE mention how awesome my god is and how I would never have done everything if not for Jesus, and I didn't do the "oh woe is me the best times of my life are done" pitying crap that everyone else always did. So I declared it a moral victory, and a rather unpleasant one like all moral victories I declare.

Quite so.

I had to go because I was the Salutatorian(yay.....).

Did my speech...felt like a trussed up goose, and had three friends get their names mispronouced by the principal.

Truly, high school only gave me two things. The freakiest woman I have ever dated and a nickname.

My school handed out fake diplomas, mainly to stop people from grabbing the diploma and then pulling a stunt like streaking through the church, giving their least favorite teachers the finger or something similar.

Does being confrontational make you feel like your dick is bigger or something?

You don't graduate from elementary school. You don't graduate from middle/junior high school. You graduate after completing all 12 grades.

That's why the numbering system doesn't start over every time you go to a new school.
