Has anyone read Star Wars: A New Hope Infinities?
This entire thread will be spoilers then, because of the ending to that comic.

Okay, now that that's done...
You'll recall that at the end Yoda (in an effort to kill Palpatine, which he apparently succeeds in doing) rams the fully intact Death Star 1 into the Imperial Palace.
Now obviously this comic "didn't happen" but I'd be curious as to the damage this incident would have done to the planet. First off, how did he get through the shields? I forget if it's stated that he mind tricked shield control or he just "pushed through" the shields or snuck through an opening for some other ship or something (he fought the Imperial sector fleet and won apparently, with a massive surprise attack on a group of ISD's).
Anyway, so the 160 km (or 120 km if you go by "official" figures) station rams the Imperial Palace at, I'm guessing "full sublight." Not sure if shields on the DS1 are up or down.
How many deaths? Enough force for a mass extinction event?
Just how much mayhem did that little green jerk cause to nail the wrinkled old prune?

whats full sublight? my understanding of space acceleration is there is no topspeed.
and, call it a hunch, but a 120km impact generally kills a planet.

The energy release on impact of that much mass (assuming a probably conservative velocity of 20 km/s, and assuming conservatively an iron sphere 99.9% empty) should be nearly at the 1e9 megaton threshold, bare minimum - and it could easily be several times greater.
Momentum-wise, again assuming the above we're talking something on the order of e20 kg*m/s.
In other words, that should EASILY be an extinction-level event just based on kinetic energy from the impact alone.
Note that while the energy threshhold is probably not enough to overcome shielding, its quite probable that the momentum is sufficiently great to do so (and remember that even if the asteroid is stopped or deflected, the momentum of the impact on the shields has to go somewhere, so we could still expect to see side effects.)

I'm studying for the CPA exam. Have a nice summer, and if you're down just sit back and realize that Joe is off somewhere, doing much worse than you are.

Damn. Looks like Yoda really botched that one.Joe wrote:Not millions, hundreds of trillions.
Couldn't he have just slagged Imperial City with the DS's turbolasers? Please keep in mind I have never read this comic, so I'm not aware of the full extent of this situation.

Ignoring all the non canon official tech manuals which ALL SAY 120 KILOMETERS...StarWars.com says:
Height:
120 kilometers in diameter
for the first DS, and
Height:
160 kilometers in diameter
for the second.

The OT ICS says 160 for DSI, and the OT ITW says more than 900 for DSII.
The Databank is often hideously outdated and run by Paoblo Hidalgo, who despises rational thought.

I was being deliberately conservative. There's probably billions of people just in the DS, and as you say the death toll on Imperial Center could be extremely high. I imagine DS would hit going pretty fast, too.Joe wrote:Not millions, hundreds of trillions.Stark wrote:Isn't crashing a Death Star into a planet.... evil? Was there a reason for him to do this? It seems like causing a mass extinction on a planet with hundreds of trillions of civilians is...whats the word...stupid. Talk about a PR clusterfuck, it would take the very best O'Reilian spinsters to turn that fiasco into a 'good move' for the Rebellion.
Kanye West Saves.
The Infinities series have been consistently shit. ANH has Yoda causing genocide. ESB has a retarded fight between Vader and Yoda. ROTJ has Han going blind thanks to carbonite freezing... and Vader turning into the Rebellion's White Knight.18-Till-I-Die wrote:Was there a reason for him to do this?
So in short, no. There was no reason for Yoda to cause mass extinctions on the galaxy's most populous planet. Bravo ANH infinities. Bravo.

Pablo's repitition of debunked and contradicted information in an attempt to prove his life does have some worth to it nonwithstanding, more recent publications and the movies show 160 km and 900 km for each death star.Praxis wrote:Since when?Spanky The Dolphin wrote:160 is now the official diameter of DSI.

No, it can also be taken with a grain of salt because Pablo Hidalgo is a lazy asshole with an agenda. He's responsible for such hits as copying the stats from the Immobiliser 418 verbatim to the Leviathan of KoTOR. Not to mention his interestingly slanted preview of ItWoCSW.
