Except there's a court case developing in Wisconsin that's all set to challenge it, as it's being applied. Either way, outlawing 527 groups is a lot harder to do than you think. There might be some new checks on their behaviour but outlawing it's out of the question.

Kerry fanatics? Give me a break. The scumbag has some implicit ties to them and its cut from the same "'dat evil McCain's been fatherin' bastards with dem darkies!" shit that they pulled in South Carolina in 2000.

Fuck him. This is the least he could have done, and plenty late too.
It's funny, the Dems have been crying for Bush to denounce the ads, and then when he does, they still have to be all pissy and moany.

CRAWFORD, Texas - President Bush (news - web sites) on Monday denounced campaign commercials aired by outside groups, including an ad that accuses John Kerry (news - web sites) of lying about his combat record in Vietnam.

"That ad and every other ad" run by such groups have no place in the campaign, Bush said when asked about the commercial sponsored by Swift Boat Veterans For Truth that has roiled the race for the White House. The group said it would not stop its new anti-Kerry ad, which will start running in three states this week.
Happy now, Kerry fanatics?
Oh fucking blow me. You make it sound as if denouncing those bullshit ads was some sort of painful thing for Bush to do. Give me a break.
Um... tell me, how does saying, "Happy now, Kerry fanatics?" make it sound like it was painful for Bush?

The Swift Boat ads aren't wrong because they're allegedly "independent" of the parties (in fact the Republicans and Bush's campaign team have a hand in these, in violation of federal law) or the presidential campaigns. They are wrong because they are chock full of lies.
What the hell do you want? Him to use an executive order to have them taken off the air? There's not a lot that Bush can do to have them stoped. If this is such slanderous crap then Kerry could take legal action to have them stopped; he's about the only one that can.

A lot of these independent ads are pure crap. This one's gaining a lot more attention just because the people involved and because Kerry hasn't done a whole lot but tout his war record.
First of all, public figures in the US have almost zero chance of winning any kind of libel or slander action, no matter how much proof they have on their side. You might as well ask why Kerry doesn't challenge Numbnuts to a duel.

If Dubya had any class (stop laughing, I mean hypothetically) he would do what Dukakis did when his supporters called George H. W. Bush a coward for bailing out of his plane and leaving his crew to die. He said there was no place in the campaign for that kind of garbage. He fired Donna Brazille from his staff for bringing up Jennifer Fitzgerald, who was supposedly Bush the Elder's mistress.

Cordier was only given the heave-ho because coordination between the campaigns and "independent" groups is illegal.

I'll wait for someone high up in the Bush camp to go on Fox News and critize the ads before I think anything of it.

They ended a whole week ago, and all he could say is "I think they're bad for the system". He has to do better than that.

Well, that's pretty weak. Bush comes out and denounces it and it's "just not good enough." Give me a break.

After a weeks consideration and advice, I've decided this is bad for the system.

Yeah, I'm not claiming it's inspirational or any of that but he DID denounce it.

Eat a dick. Simply wanting people from one party to stop outright fucking lying about their opponent does not make one a fanatic.

I would be more than satisified if Bush came out and said something like "I think Kerry is a worthless left wing pussy who weaseled his way through the Senate, and if made president would turn our country into a bunch of pinko commies and UN whores. But he did earn his metals."

In other words, run on his Senate record. :P

The Democratic Party is partnering with MoveOn.org, People for the American Way, Campaign for America's Future, and dozens of other groups representing millions of Americans to organize a massive public mobilization. On Wednesday, May 14, join us by calling and emailing your representatives in Congress to let them know that the majority of Americans oppose more irresponsible tax cuts that go overwhelmingly to the wealthiest sliver of Americans.
Oh yes, there's no link between the DNC and those 527s.
