Approval Rating compared to Terror Alerts
I've heard many Democrats complain that Bush's administration uses terror alerts to help his popularity and campaign. While I was sifting through some poll numbers on what appears to be an unbiased site, I found this interesting approval rating poll. What is of interest to me is the fact that every time there is a terror alert, Bush's approval rating dips down.

Correlation != causation. Terror alerts correspond with lows in the polls. You'll notice a trend of the approval rating rising after each terror alert is issued.

Your correct, but they never seem to raise to the point PRIOR to the raising of the alert. So how exactly does this help Bush?Durandal wrote:Correlation != causation. You just said it yourself. They raise after the alert has been issued. That's the whole point behind those silly terrorist alerts: to give a boost in polls when they're at their lows.Talon Karrde wrote:Your correct, but they never seem to raise to the point PRIOR to the raising of the alert. No, you missed my point. I said that, and if you look at the numbers you'll see it too, the numbers NEVER boost back beyond the point that they were originally at when they raise the alert. Ex. if his numbers are at 50%, then they raise the alert, and the numbers drop to say 46%, the numbers return to a mark lower than 50%, say 48 or 49%.

looking the chart over it appears the numbers dip significantly before each alert. while the alerts aren't enough to get him back to the point where he used to be, they're at the very least keeping him out of the red zone. so in that sense they're helping him by bumping it up a couple of notches each time it dips.Talon Karrde wrote:No, you missed my point. When did I ever say that they were supposed to return him to where he was? He's just trying to stay alive. His approval rating has been steadily dropping because he's an incompetent fool with an administration who are composed of handlers, fall-men and Karl Rove, and the nation is starting to realize that, but we've still got dumb-asses like you who will vote for him in November.Talon Karrde wrote:No, you missed my point.
