The planet is clearly low-tech, without even proper shipbuiling facilities. It'll be worth about as much as it cost to take it- very little.

Yeah, and we stopped, you know why? Because, among other reasons, states told the government to go shove off. And what could the federal government do? Jack-squat. Court order? Are we the US? No. We have a flat 15% income tax+a planetary sales tax on non-food items that provides the planetary governments with revenue. this tax rate is adjustable. And if unexpected probems(like a war which inherenlty costs a lot of money) happens, the federal government can bill the planets to help make up the shortfall. Our people would for the most part, not have a problem with that. especially if it is a .5% increase.

This, no matter how you look at it, is an increase in taxes. It will never pass, by your own words. If the federal government tried to burden a planet like that, and your people reacted as you said they would, I don't think the govenor would have any problems from his constituents. You want to have the president levy it, fine, but if you play your nation without contradicting yourself you'll have problems with your populace.

That is true, and I never said political heads wouldnt roll. You just wont have a civil war scenario.

Put it this way, the senate knows that that is the only way they can protect their people, because if this treaty does nt get ratified, we are fucked. Doesnt mean they will keep their jobs come election time.

Um dude? Oni is in the plains. Not in the forest. When was the last time you managed to see clearly 1km in a forest? Oh, and it's slightly hard to sneak up on someone who's telepathic. And it's rather difficult to reach someone who is ways up in the air as well... You think Oni's going to walk the km to the kill?
