"It's undeniable that the free-marketeers and Atlanticists have taken the lion's share in this commission," he told Le Figaro.
I found this part very interesting. Wasn't the free market idea the primary reason the EU even came into existence? It seemed that one of the major reasons that it even got off the ground was the it was designed to set up a free trade zone in Europe.
Is it me or does "Atlantacist" mean "dirty America-lovers?"
If Religion and Politics were characters on a soap opera, Religion would be the one that goes insane with jealousy over Politics' intimate relationship with Reality, and secretly murder Politics in the night, skin the corpse, and run around its apartment wearing the skin like a cape shouting "My votes now! All votes for me! Wheeee!" -- Lagmonster

What they mean is that they support more liberal economics, i.e. less rigid employment regulation (the Germans problem) and less state ownership (the French problem).
It's funny that the French STILL think they should be able to dictate to the rest of the EU even when the additional countries came in.
France certainly did itself no favours politically by more or less threatening that countries like Poland were putting their EU entry into jeopardy by supporting the coalition in Iraq.

The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.
I definitely don't mind the French getting the short end of the stick, they have most annoying and deserve the comeuppance.

If it became an independent country and a part of the EU within a short time, things might work out, but currently Turkey is being a royal pain in the ass over it, and Greece will agree to a Turkish-dominated government of all of Cyprus around the same time Charlemagne takes power again in Germany.
Do you mean "independent country" as in "not half-claimed by Turks"? Because Cyprus has technically been an independent nation since 1960. And Cyprus is a member of the EU.
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

See what happens when Gaullist bureaucrats get to define what they think Free Trade means?

Well, yeah, forgot about that. But anyway, it's basically in a royal clusterfuck right now. As it's been for the past, oh, 30 years...
