NYC faces Contempt of Court Charges
Just on the local news. Over 200 protestors have been held beyond the legal 24 hour time limit. A judge will fine the city $1,000 per protestor. Some argue that the NYPD planned to hold many protestors as long as possible to keep them off the streets, NYPD counters that the system was simply overwhelmed.

How interesting.
Do you think NYC will pay up?

Not a good idea to challenge a contempt of court ruling. Appelate judges give other judges LOTS of leeway in contempt charges. The City is clearly in violation here and the system being overwhelmed is not really an excuse. They'll likely pay the fine and hope this simply goes away.Gandalf wrote:I thought they might challenge them in court or something.Rogue 9 wrote:They kind of have to...Gandalf wrote:How interesting.

I'd imagine that it would cost the city more to fight a court battle over this than to just to pay up.

I think it's the state.neoolong wrote:Exactly who are they paying?
Don't fines go to the city? It'd be like the city paying the city.

If the city is "overwhelmed" it's probably their own damn fault. From what I've heard/read, they were rounding up people wholesale with no attempt to distinguish protestors from innocent passers-by.
Something similar happend a couple years ago in Chicago, where a large protest wound up shutting down Lake Shore Drive and much of the Loop around evening rush hour. When the cops moved in and starting making arrests the office building were just letting out. So folks who'd been at work all day walked out on the street, were knocked down, cuffed, and hauled away as "protestors", even though those same people weren't even aware a protest was going on until they walked into it.
Same tactic in NYC from what I've seen - arrest everyone in sight and sort them out later. Much later. Days later.
All in keeping with the current administration's stance that everyone is guilty until proven innocent - and even then, you're still a suspicious character.
And, of course, the idea is to inimidate people, shut them up, and keep them off the streets so King George can continue to move about in blissful ignorance of the anger mounting against him and his crowd.
