Pope Denounces Gay Unions in Canada

Calif. Court Voids Gay Nuptial Licenses
VATICAN CITY — Pope John Paul II kept up his campaign against gay marriage Saturday, telling the ambassador from Canada — where some provinces allow same-sex couples to wed — that such unions create a "false understanding" of marriage.
In past months, the pope urged authorities to stop approving gay marriages, saying that they degrade the true sense of marriage.
The pope spoke Saturday to the new Canadian Ambassador to the Holy See, Donald Smith.
"The institution of marriage necessarily entails the complementarity of husbands and wives who participate in God's creative activity through the raising of children," said the pontiff, according to the text of the speech released by the Vatican.
"Spouses thereby ensure the survival of society and culture, and rightly deserve specific and categorical legal recognition by
the State.
"Any attempts to change the meaning of the word 'spouse' contradict right reason: legal guarantees, analogous to those granted to marriage, cannot be applied to unions between persons of the same sex without creating a false understanding of the nature of marriage."
Three Canadian provinces, accounting for about 70 percent of the country's 31 million people, allow same-sex marriage: Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia. The ruling Liberal Party has promised legislation legalizing gay marriage, perhaps next year after Canada's Supreme Court gives a nonbinding opinion on a tentative bill.
Speaking to another newly appointed ambassador to the Holy See, Philip McDonagh of Ireland, the pope called on the European Union to keep a policy of openness and acceptance of immigrants. Ireland held the EU rotating presidency until the end of June.
"The plight of refugees and those displaced by poverty, war or persecution is particularly dramatic and calls for special consideration and generosity," John Paul said.
"The Holy See hopes that the steps taken during the Irish presidency of the European Union in favor of policies of openness to other peoples will continue to inspire the community's attitude to immigrants from other continents and cultures."
*sigh* Hey Pope, try doing something more effective other than "Bah!!! Gay is sin!!! Bah!!!" That being said, how come the principle of "what doesn't adapt goes the way of the dinosaurs'' apply to the Catholic Church? Their social policies are so Medival that a great percentage of their followers don't even believe in everything the Church teaches. I had a teacher once who is Catholic and a friend of mine asked him "Do you believe everything the Church says?" and he responded with "No" and she responded "Why do you still stay then?" and he goes "I don't know." I don't know whether to feel.
That being said, Canada really does sound like a good place to live. I don't know why I grew up always hearing Canada bashing. Its socially liberal, has low crime, decent education, good healthy care...etc. Go Canada!
I was a little surprised that the article didn't include a statement from the Canadian ambassador defending Canada's acceptance of gay marriage and noted the lack of any effort to try contacting him for such a statement.
Then I noticed it was from Fox News.

Say, do you want it to be a threesome with your wife? Or a foursome with your wife and sister-in-law? I'm up for either.
Concurred. The Church is so fucking nosy, it'd be awesome to just ignore them and see their reaction.

This just in: the Pope bans sex and marriage between infertile or elderly couples.

So in other words, the Pope reasserts Catholic orthodoxy and SDnetters act all self-righteous about it.
Am I shocked? Hell no. The chance that the Pope would contradict Catholic orthodoxy so completely as to endorse gay marriage are so miniscule that any shock would be that of somebody who has never heard of Catholicism.
Am I disappointed? Again, no. "Disappointed" would imply that I had any expectation that the Pope would endorse gay marriage. Since I had no such expectation, it was not present to be disappointed.
So all that's left in this thread is... SDNetters bitching about religious authority figures. Whoop de shit.

This is about the Church sticking its head into sovereign states' affairs, where it has absolutely no place. If religious leaders can't handle the idea that it's not the 14th century anymore and that church and state are best left separate, then maybe the world doesn't need archaic organizations like the Church around anymore.

No, the Pope tries to rebuke a nation for governing itself according to secular law and we point out that he's a fucking useless arrogant piece of shit.

I see the difference between "endorse gay marriage" and "publicly, repeatedly, and stridently attack secular governments for upholding secular law" does not occur to you. Mr. Pedophile Protector has been attacking Canada for a long time now, and he won't let up.

Where does one state get of telling another state how to run its affairs on such matters?
Has Canada reminded the Holy See of King Henry V111's reformation?

Fuck off, dumbass. I'm pointing out that this isn't shocking, and this thread is no different from me-tooism at any other board. Quit whining and reading extra meaning into my statements (and that applies to you also, Mike). I have disapproving feelings toward the Pope's stance on the matter (which should be evident in the tone of my post), but they can't be expressed as shock (since shock in this case would imply lack of familiarity with Catholic doctrine), nor can they be expressed as disappointment (since disappointment would imply expectation of anything other than what actually happened).

Yeah, because how many other churches go out and have their leader(s) make proclamations to the media aimed at changing state policy?

Huh. I wonder why the hell is the Pope considered to be some sort of a great man of the XX century. Down here, it almost seems like he delivered the modern world from darkness of the first 3/4 of the 1900s from the way people praise him.
As far as I can see, he does less than the UN. Heck, the medieval Pope at least had some real power that came with his funny hat. But all JP can do is bitch and moan (mostly spitting revolutionary truths like "terrorism is bad, mmkay?") and make statements and road trips to various countries that change nothing except occasionally blocking traffic in major cities when he drives through.
Does he really think he can still influence Canada...or any other sovereign nation? As far as I'm concerned, he could simply cease to exist right now.

Well that's just brilliant. Ask the Pope to quit talking about homosexual activity being a sin, when that's his job. He's the leader of a CHURCH. He doesn't look at polls and go, "Well hell, this looks popular, maybe we'll change the Church's teaching."

Hey asshole, we don't tolerate domestic religious leaders telling the state what to do. Why the fuck would we tolerate a foreign religious leader doing the same thing?
