Stupid Computer Question

Post by LadyTevar »

In my office there are several computers about to be surplused. One of them is a 1000mhz processor with 256mb RAM. This is way beyond my little H&P comp I use to run the net now.
Should I get this computer, or get a newer, faster one from WalMarts (eMachine) for about $500 on Layaway?

Offer $50 for this computer. If they say no, get the $500 deal.

If it's cheaper, and not broken in any obvious ways, go for it.

the US version of eMachines are a mystery to me, but from what I know about the European versions, they're reasonably solid for web and wordprocessing, but no great shakes at anything more complex. (the European ones also have one of the lowest breakdown rates of any of the brands we service, not bad for a dedicated low-cost box.

offer them something reasonable for this one and then upgrade. do you know what type of processor it has? that'll largely affect its upgradability in that area.

though boosting the ram will affect performance majorly, something as simple as boosting to 512 megs is a sizable boost.

A 1 GHz computer, with a good graphics card, isn't bad.
My 900 mhz Celeron (ick) with a Geforce 2 (ick) MX 400 (best of the Geforce 2 series, almost as good as the low end Geforce 4) can run Jedi Academy...

Who made the 1GHz comp? Was it a local shop or just something bought from Dell, etc?

It's a Dell. And I've spoken with my supervisor, who's told me that no, I can't take it from the office, I have to let it go to Surplus, who doesn't sell like a commercial store, but AUCTIONS things off in LOTS.

Which means I'd have to buy more than one computer, just to get the one I want.
But Walmart has an Compaq Presario for $600, which I can do on three-month Layaway.
(Nice trick: put on layaway, if you can't pay it in threemonths, take it off, then put it back in as a 'new' layaway with the prior payments as the 'new downpayment'. Three more months to pay it off!)
