Bit torrent and hard drive

Post by PainRack »

I read that using bit torrent extensively tends to fragment, and overheat your hard drive. Apparently, one of the methods they suggested was to increase the disk cache, however, another just stated that you need to purchase more RAM if your com slows down.........

Err.... advice?

what the FUCK?! Link please. Sounds like a bullshit article to me. Probably some RIAA lackey trying to scare people out of using P2P software.

Agreed, I use BitTorrent regularly as well, and I am not noticing any problems with my hard drive.
There are two kinds of people in the world: the kind who think it’s perfectly reasonable to strip-search a 13-year-old girl suspected of bringing ibuprofen to school, and the kind who think those people should be kept as far away from children as possible … Sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference between drug warriors and child molesters.” - Jacob Sullum

Bullshit. Someone just has a HD that isn't properly ventilate and cooled so he's experiencing problems.

Some BT implementations can have extensive fragmentation depending on how they write to the drive (since they grab random chunks at a time) but other versions can pre-allocated space.

If you specify in your BT program that you want to allocate space in advance you can eliminate any chance of fragmentation.

Could it be googled?

If it was Big5 Chinese, it's obviously a rumor sent out by those MP3 witch-hunters in Taiwan. (Yes, thanks to the 301 Act, there are occasional witch-hunts there.)
