So, why follow the news?
Okay, just some supposing here and its late in the night, so forgive me if I sound odd.
What point is there in following the international news when your life is in no way connected to it? Why is it important to read and discover that the world is going through tough burdens all the time and that you can do nothing about it but sit and watch. Why follow the international news when all it does is depress, anger, or shock you?
Again, be nice.

If we are completely ignorant of what's going on in the world around us, that gives carte blanche to unscrupulous liars to fuck us over if we elect them into office based on false promises. If the electorate has at least some informed idea of what's going on and why, they can exercise some amount of control. The world is so globalized these days that we cannot afford to ignore things that happen on the other side of the world.
One good example is the US economic situation. The US is 2+ trillion dollars into debt and working up more through a massive budget deficit. The only thing really keeping it afloat is the fact that the US dollar is the de facto international currency and oil prices are tied to the US dollar. If this were to change, e.g. the oil price being tied to the euro, it could do serious damage to the US, and if the creditors lose their confidence or start demanding their money back, US economy is going to go down the shitter. The only problem being, as it's the world's largest economy at the moment and has a tremendous influence everywhere, everybody else would be going down the shitter too. Therefore I have an interest in what's happening in American politics and in other events elsewhere in the world that influence them.

Because otherwise, for example, you end up believing outrageous horseshit about how some tinpot thug with a fifth-rate army in a country which is falling to bits around him actually has a vast arsenal of nuclear and chemical weapons ready to attack your homeland in 45 minutes; all entirely upon the sayso of the Liar-in-Chief when he goes on TV to beat the war drums.FaxModem1 wrote:Okay, just some supposing here and its late in the night, so forgive me if I sound odd.

When ballots have fairly and constitutionally decided, there can be no successful appeal back to bullets.

Oil an emergency?! It's about time, Brigadier, that the leaders of this planet of yours realised that to remain dependent upon a mineral slime simply doesn't make sense.

Via money Europe could become political in five years" "... the current communities should be completed by a Finance Common Market which would lead us to European economic unity. Only then would ... the mutual commitments make it fairly easy to produce the political union which is the goal"

As Edi says..I like to be able to detect when I am being screwed over, why and how.
One thing one learns in life is that 95% of the people are led by the other 5%. That 5% is of an ever changing membership, but it is always there, it's members rising and falling based on one pretext or another right throughout time immemorial.
To avoid being two legged mutton, look, listen and learn, then laugh at the fools and the fools who follow them.

Well, that was one of the most... wait, you wrote "be nice", but it was a very ignorant post. You should follow the international news to increase your understanding about things that happen, what factors that are behind things that happen in the world and to increase your general knowledge of the world.FaxModem1 wrote:Okay, just some supposing here and its late in the night, so forgive me if I sound odd.

I don't know what age you are, but it's always important to have a general understanding, especially if you're in still in school.
One of the the Swedish channels videotext services wrote on a page today about the situation in Los Angeles. Approx. 10 percent of the population can't read and that 56 percent can be classified as uneducated. That is terrible figures. Look at Jaywalking on the Tonight Show !
Frightening examples !
No, seriously. Look at the international news and try to put them in a proper context. To understand a situation is a way not to make it happen again.

Re: So, why follow the news?
some of us actually like being able to make up our own minds on the current political situations rather than having them spoon-fed to us and not being able to tell what's real from what's not. which a significant chunk of the american populace seems to have trouble doing.FaxModem1 wrote:Okay, just some supposing here and its late in the night, so forgive me if I sound odd.

For I dipt into the future, far as human eye could see,
Saw the Vision of the world, and all the wonder that would be;
Saw the heavens fill with commerce, argosies of magic sails,
Pilots of the purple twilight dropping down with costly bales;
Heard the heavens fill with shouting, and there rain'd a ghastly dew
From the nations' airy navies grappling in the central blue;

It was Swedish TV 3, page 143. It referred to a study.Gustav32Vasa wrote:Which channel and page nr?Mange the Swede wrote:One of the the Swedish channels videotext services wrote on a page today about the situation in Los Angeles.
