At least 37 people were killed in Baghdad alone. Many of them died when a U.S. helicopter fired on a disabled U.S. Bradley fighting vehicle as Iraqis swarmed around it, cheering, throwing stones and waving the black and yellow sunburst banner of Iraq's most-feared terror organization.

The dead from the helicopter strike included Arab television reporter Mazen al-Tumeizi, who screamed, ``I'm dying, I'm dying,'' as a cameraman recorded the chaotic scene. An Iraqi cameraman working for the Reuters news agency and an Iraqi freelance photographer for Getty Images were wounded.

Maimed and lifeless bodies of young men and boys lay in the street as the stricken U.S. vehicle was engulfed in flames and thick black smoke.

You kinda don't want to hang around a burning armoured fighting vehicle,
or military hardware of any kind; they have a kind of odd tendency to explode
when the fire reaches the ammo stowage.

But hey, lets dance around it like savages!

It is kind of morbidly funny. These idiots were swarming around a disabled Bradley whose crew had already evacuated, and they were firing their weapons at US Army helicopters above. Really brilliant move, since not only do the Americans want to prevent the theft of sensitive equipment from the vehicle, but they don't take well to being shot at.

Oh--i agree with you--burning vehicle, weapons, flaming gasoline--that's just asking for mucho trouble.

I was referring to the guy dying on-air -- you just know that's going to be replayed over and over again

The news reporter's comment made me giggle. I heard it in a Wicked Witch of the West voice mentally.

What other brilliant tactical lessons will we learn next from the same party that gave us "fire into the air randomly if you've got an AK"?

NEWS RELEASE
HEADQUARTERS UNITED STATES CENTRAL COMMAND
7115 South Boundary Boulevard

Phone: (813) 827-5894; FAX: (813) 827-2211; DSN 651-5894

Release Number: 04-09-36
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BRADLEY FIGHTING VEHICLE DESTROYED IN ATTACK

BAGHDAD, Iraq— A Multi-National Force Bradley Fighting Vehicle was destroyed during an attack this morning at approximately 6:50 on Hayfa Street near the International Zone in Baghdad.

The Bradley and its crew were en route to assist a small unit under fire when it was hit by a car bomb and was rendered inoperable.

Two of the Bradley crewmen were wounded in the attack.

While evacuating the vehicle, the crewmembers came under attack by hand grenades, rocket propelled grenades and small-arms fire, further wounding four more Soldiers.

Soldiers kept an eye on the vehicle from a safe distance ensuring that sensitive equipment and weapons were not taken.

Air support was called, and as the helicopters flew over the burning Bradley they received small-arms fire from the insurgents in vicinity of the vehicle. Clearly within the rules of engagement, the helicopters returned fire destroying some anti-Iraqi forces in the vicinity of the Bradley.

Air assets fired upon the anti-Iraqi forces and the Bradley preventing the loss of sensitive equipment and weapons.

As the helicopters made their final pass, the Bradley Fighting Vehicle was on fire and a crowd was gathering around the vehicle. The air crew could not discriminate between armed insurgents and civilians on the ground and did not reengage. U.S. forces did not engage the crowd of civilians that gathered around the vehicle.

An unknown number of insurgents and Iraq civilians were wounded or killed in the incident. The incident is currently under investigation.

This reminds me of an image i saw on the Washington POst's cover a few
days ago, showing a "militant" in Iraq aiming a RPG-7, it was taken from
the front and was a clear close up photograph, takehn by someone with
an islamic name.

You know, I sort of miss the days when the news media was on our side.

Hmm... It looks like the Bradley has ERA on it. What's ERA an acronym for Boys and Girls? Explosive Reactive Armor. Brilliant Idea to be sitting around next to it.

In fairness to the GLA mobs, they probably haven't been educated on something like that. Hell, a lot of people in North America don't know about that either. However, there's no excuse for thinking that you can stand atop a burning vehicle and fire at a helicopter with an AK-47 without drawing a hostile response.

Maybe they thought they were invisible, like GLA troops in C&C Generals.

Or maybe they wanted to die, so they could go to heaven. Since suicide is forbidden, and being crushed to death by the crowd while on a pilgrimage to Mecca is not a very pleasant way to go, this is the best solution in their mind.

Have a very nice day.

Except that that is the US RPG guy's comment. GLA RPG dudes say something else that I don't remember, other than "Guarding the GLA underground."

It's a *very* good thing for that crowd that the U.S. soldiers didn't follow SOP...or weren't equipped to. That is, once abandoning a vehicle, pop thermite. Set it on things like the SINCGARS and other sensitive electronics. (My idea would be to place it on an ammo storage are and get the hell out of dodge, but hard to do that when two of your guys are wounded, I guess. Oh well.

I feel sorry for the reporter and his family. It was news, he was covering it (obviously he was covering it too closely), and now he's dead, and his family will probably see him dying horribly on tv.
