I'm too lazy to do it myself, but you could get the job done cleanly by manually drawing a selection curve around the ship's outline and then adjusting the colour strength for this selection down to zero so it turns into gray-scales. I've done that kind of hand-masked gray-scaling before, just for fun.

1. start photoshop
2. load picture
3. enter mask mode
4. set brush tool to ca 60 pixels with soft boarder
5. use brush tool to "paint" galactica
6. leave mask mode
6.1 make selection boarder invisble (ctrl-H)
7. open gradient window (ctrl-M)
8. select "red" from dropdown menu
9. add point in the middle of gradient.
10. drag point down until you reach requred color
11. finished.
