The issue as I see it is that they would trace the link and discover a pirated strip. My way is much less likely to land that kind of trouble.

I think what he means is that the humor of Doonesbury is generally not that easy to get. But in this case, yes, it's really fucking funny.

Piss off. I like Al Franken. I like the Daily Show. I even thought TV Nation was funny. But Doonesbury is just painfully unfunny, or at least it has been for the last half-decade or so.

From what I heard, Doonesbury used to be non partisan, liked by both
sides, until the Administration of Bush the Elder, when Trudeau ran some
really bad cartoons attacking Bush 41 when he was running against
Dukakis; since then, he's only gotten worse.

We can at least thank God that he hasn't fallen into Ted Rall territory.

Doonesbury is simply boring and lacking in original humor, and has been ever since I was old enough to read comics.

Mallard Fillmore first hatched from the pen of Bruce Tinsley at The Daily Progress in Charlottesville, Va. Today, the celebrated comic strip about Tinsley's conservative reporter-duck fills the bill in nearly 400 newspapers nationwide.

Distributed by King Features Syndicate since 1994, readers of newspapers across the country enjoy the duck's right-wing viewpoint.

Tinsley created Mallard for what he saw as the conservative underdog. The strip is for "the average person out there: the forgotten American taxpayer who's sick of the liberal media and cultural establishments that act like he or she doesn't exist," he says.

"Mallard" almost did not see the light of day. When asked to come up with a mascot for The Daily Progress entertainment section, artist Tinsley showed editors three ideas: a blue hippopotamus; a big nose in tuxedo and cane; and a duck.

Tinsley says the hippo went unused for fear of offending overweight people, and the nose was axed because it would "offend people of Jewish and Mediterranean descent, not to mention Arabs and anyone else with a big nose." Tinsley says he thought his editors were kidding, but they were not.

Once Mallard Fillmore was off and running, his editors requested Tinsley tone down its conservative bias. When he refused, he was fired.

The strip caught the attention of The Washington Times, which used Tinsley's wise-quacking journalist in the commentary section before moving the strip to the comics pages. The rest, as they say, is history.

Durandal, I believe Joe said that because Natorgator assumed that Joe wouldn't find something funny just because of his political affiliation. Which is an unfair assumption on Nator's part, as most people on this board tend to seperate their politics from their sense of humor, and Joe isn't an exception to that, and he was pointing out that he likes humor that is left-leaning if it's funny. At least that's why I think Joe mentioned Franken and The Daily Show, and was slightly offended at the assumption that he cannot keep his politics and humor seperate.

And I also didn't find the strip that funny, although I think the color-coded terror alert system is rediculous fearmongering, I've just seen this joke done way too much.

That last panel's line, "And remember, folks-no matter what color the day, you either support our president during a time of crisis, or you don't! It's up to you!," confuses me. I know that the author meant it as sarcasm, but to me that really came off as though he genuinely believes it. It sort of works against the message he's trying to convey. I think it was a really stupid way of ending the strip.

The crisis he's talking about is the crisis of losing the election, not the war on terror.

Trudeau was definitely being sarcastic in the last line. It's just a play on Bush's constant reminders that you're either "with us or against us" when it comes to terror.

Mallard Fillmore used to be in the editorial section of my local newspaper, right next to Doonesbury, but they replaced with the (far superior to either, in my opinion) Non Sequitir.
