Borealis System

Miyako grinned as the reports flooded in from the net of sensor drones the Hajr fleet had deployed as it dropped from Kincaid. The enemy was present in numbers, and there was little doubt that more reinforcements would be en route. Of course, it mattered not- She knew that Atja's 2cnd War Cluster was already on it's way, having dealt with Bohica's shipyards, and she had significant regional superiority. I was hardly a shame that the enemy had failed to fall for the Hajr's attempts to draw defenses from the home systems- now she would get the hard fight she wanted.

Miyako had been trained by Jerac su Fassar, the imposing hunter of Machines and leader of the 3rd War Cluster. As such, she had combat experience- but much of her crew was green, consisting of crews fresh from the training creches on Eketrina. She grinned- the enemy was similarly limited, and lacked her numbers, and coulddn't possibly have as many reinforcements incoming as she did- after all, together the 2cnd and 4th War Clusters had parity with the entire White Suns Navy.

All she needed to do was strike hard until Atja could arrive- and it would be in a little over half an hour. The system's early warning nets would detect his vessels incoming at any minute.

"Bring us about, and commence sublight approach against Australis."

It looked as if the enemy had a full four capital ships over the planet, giving her a mere 50% advantage in capital firepower- but unlike the Krytos in the far-off UP, who faced similar odds, Miyako's fleet had full escort coverage and reinforcements under an hour away.

As the Ouster fleet began to move, it fell into attack formation. Escorts groupd tightly around their charges, and the four Attack Carriers in the unit launched their gunships and interceptors. The dangerous little craft grouped tightly around their motherships, with the interceptors prepared to lash out on sorties from the cover of the gunships and escorts PD fire.

The fleet's bomber squadrons, Fast and Heavy, remained docked. They' be launched when the time was right.

Australis.
Bridge of the Killer of Enslavers

"Well, they finally understood that there was nowhere to reply their demands of surrender. Now it is time for the showdown. They against us. No duplicities. No tricks. Only rule: the last one standing wins" said Siratrex from his command post in an almost jovial manner. "They are more powerful and numerous and we cannot hope to win this battle until the arrival of the 4th. We will have to play defensive until their arrival. The interdictors prevent them from using tacjumps, so they will come sublight. Use weapons according to enemy distance. Tell all Captains to keep formation until otherwise ordered. Our current position favours coordinated point defense and adds to our own the firepower of the battle stations and the ground emplacements."

When the Ousters entered guided missile range, the fleet and the stations opened fire both with FTL hunter killers and standard missiles. The Ousters suffered heavy casualties in their approach, the most notable being the loss of one of their attack carriers, victim of a combined barrage after a long bombardment that had depleted its shields.

But the casualties among the White Sun ranks were also grievous. Even worse considering the numerical advantage of the Ousters. The torpedo frigates that had inflicted the bulk of the Ouster casualties had taken the worst by far. Of the thirty five that had started the battle only nine remained when the Ousters crossed the limit of gun range. Among the other vessels, one of the Cluster cruisers had been destroyed and several ships had suffered some damage.

The beam weapons of both fleets were hot and ready, but since the initial shots it was clear that even with the planetary defenses of Australis helping, the Ousters had numbers on their side. The 4th fleet was still some minutes away and until its arrival, the already weathered White Sun forces would have to face the wrath of a quarter of the most powerful military in Known Space.

Australis System
Command Deck, Cataphract Heroic Sacrifice

Miyako grimaced in anger. The Attack Carrier Swift Predator had taken a brutal hit amidships. Her shields had failed, and she was wallowing behind, out of the fight. Two of the Fleet's Expansion of Civilization-class Strike Cruisers had gone up under the fire, losing shields. One had taken a hit to the reactor cluster and had exploded spectacularly, and the other's front half was a mess of twisted metal and flash-cooked bodies. Shields had drained across the fleet.

Miyako surveyed the losses- the Predator had lost more than half her strike wing in the explosion, but the rest of her payload had formed up around the fleet's cruisers.

Jerac had been a forceful man, one who enjoyed a standup fight. Miyako felt the same way, and couldn't help but enjoy the chance to show the White Suns soldiers how war was fought.

Across the 4th War Cluster, four Interdictors came on. White Suns reinforcements would have to arrive at distance, now, and the enemy was pinned.

Fire lashed out- Furious streams of space/time distortion licked out from the bows of the vessels. It was a devastating volley, thee sort which could smash down the defenses of even the most powerful starships- but it was not aimed at the White Suns capital vessels.

Vast holes were opened up in the White Suns formation. The thick streams of fire licked from target to target, aiming at the escorts of the White Suns fleet. The raw, brutal firepower of an Ouster alpha strike was something the weaker shields of escorts and cruisers could not deny.

In a display of awesome co-ordination, the three remaining Attack Carriers released their fighter payloads. Wings of Aesirfausts and Morderwulves, guarded by swirling groups of Nachtjager interceptors sprung ahead, diving towards their targets- the enemy capital ships. The Ouster fighters were piloted by monstrosities. Suspended in armored decanters, pale forms hung in thick, amniotic fluid. Their bodies were flushed with combat drugs, and their minds were cybered until their was little distinction between them and the AIs their fighters contained. They hurled themselves into the gaps torn in the enemy escort screen, spiraling in a complicated pattern with computer controlled precision, and within seconds, explosions erupted over the shields, and then the hulls, of the White Suns fleet. Stange and Zweihander antiship missiles set off their powerful warheads into the enemy vessels.

The shielding and armor of most White Suns vessels was aimed at repelleing faster-than-light torpedoes and laser attack. At that job, it was quite effective, rendering the White Suns truly dangerous opponents to the laser-heavy Ouster forces- but the Ouster heavy and fast bombers relied instead on powerful short-range contact missiles to deal with capital ship targets.

With so little range to target, the enemy had little room to dogfight or shoot down the fighters. With their escort screens rent asunder by capital ship firepower, there would be massive damage to the enemy wall of battle.

The Ouster fleet shook even as their fighter strike ravaged the White Suns capital units. Shields began to drop, and more cruisers fell under the Confederation's firepower. The Diaspora's Harbinger, a Cataphract, had taken a number of direct hits and her shields were dangerously low.
The Red Queen, an Attack Carrier, wasa falling out of formation, her hull burning in a dozen places, atmosphere venting.

The Ouster capital ships were already retargetting. Those vessels which survived the short-range fighter assault would soon find their bear hulls ravaged by antimatter blasts.

Veithan Empire
Veitha System, Veitha III
Veithan Complex

At this moment Yrt possessed all of his attention, his eyes watching his Krell counter part closely as they shared thoughts. He waited patiently as Yrt gathered himself and analyzed the words he had offered them. The Veithan stood by them, for here and now there was no real need for that sort of deception. They were both warriors, both taking dissimilar paths that ultimately had converged in Manasa. Avery was not fool, he was not arrogant enough to believe that all paths had to be like his own. And such he waited for what Yrt had to share with him, aware that some things could not be rushed.

Yrt opened his mind just enough to allow him a glimpse of the thoughts tumbling through his head. He did not give in to the temptation of testing Yrt’s mental defenses; he had been trained by Natalya. He expected that they would be strong and run deep. He considered for a moment, silence enveloping the room and its present inhabitants for seconds before his thoughts gently slid within Yrt’s mind.

~I am not surprised that our paths have been very different Yrt. And yes, I do acknowledge that my words may carry with them a certain amount of naiveté to those not intimately aware with my experience. Nonetheless, I stand by what I said.~ He paused for a moment, his eyes watching Yrt’s for a fraction of a second before he continued. ~The Empire is my cause, the defense of its interest my primary concern. It is a cause that I have given myself to willingly. The sacrifices have been considerable, but the rewards have been nearly as great.~

The Veithan hesitated for a moment before he continued. ~There is a great deal of personal freedom within the Empire. I am not sure how deeply you have studied our history, but I was under no obligation to became what I am. Nonetheless, when it was discovered that I was a prime…certain opportunities were opened to me that were very tempting. Along with these opportunities, certain demands were tagged along with them.~ Primes were the most valued resource of the Empire. There was only a small percentage of primes in the Empire, and as such they were a valued commodity. The Veithan government had placed numerous systems in place to detect psychic potential among its citizens, and once a prime was found doors that would normally be closed would be opened. All primes in the Empire had the option of entering the best schools in the Empire, all primes had the option of significant subsidies and bonuses to be offered to them. The Empire showered Primes with all manner of rewards and incentives so they could join these institutes and there, find their strength. The catch was of course, that once the offer was accepted the Veithan prime pledged to work for the Empire in a role that best suited him or her. It was in this manner, that Avery had been found, taught and trained to become what he was today.

The second that he had accepted the Empire’s generous offer, he had been bound to its rules. Ultimately, he did not resist for the pride in his parents at being a prime was immediate and his gratification at serving his people was something that he quickly grew accustomed to. Primes, reaped the largest rewards but they also had to endure some disadvantages. Arranged marriages between Primes was a common occurrence, and while the Empire preferred for primes in an institution to find their own love, there were times where marriages were arranged for the strengthening of the genes, or the isolation of others. Some Primes by the very nature of their gifts lost nearly all right to a normal life, dominated by the gifts that had blessed or cursed them.

~Ultimately, we stand here similar in many ways and not in others. I do not presume to tell you that your goals and achievements as an agent of the Krell, are somehow diminished by that fact. I serve the Empire, and through it my people. That is my cause.~ He paused for a moment as if considering for a moment. ~I don’t think that either you or I are more righteous than the other. We both deal in death, and that leaves its own scars.~ He went silent for a moment at that. He was not religious, he had seen far too much to believe that there was a higher power involved in anything anymore. He believed in needs and politics, and was aware that he had been sent to kill for such concepts as “clear and present danger” or “denying a forward base of operations to the enemy.” If the King of Manasa had not decided to work with the Empire, he would have taken Yrt’s place as his executioner. International politics were amoral affairs.

The Shi fleet, that had been seen by numerous spies departing on a vector for Krell space, or possibly past the Krell to attack Camaro had unaccountably vanished.

OOC: Control of this fleet is ceded to Rogue 9 and Frigidmagi, as I am never going to be in the appropriate place at the appropriate time, and the fleet will be responding to Alliance needs anyway. Will still conduct private war with Nitram.

"Dammit, where are they?"

"I don't know."

"Spies reported that they left a five days ago. They should have been here two days ago, maybe sooner. Did our peripheral scanners pick up anything at all?"

"No, nothing. Nothing at Camaro either, which we identified as their likely second target."

"Dammit. They must have changed course in deep space. We have a missing fleet on our hands, and a damn big one. Could they be turning home?"

"Perhaps. Or they could be going to Nashtar, to Draconis space, to the UP, to Eketrina...."

"No idea, though, huh? Well, if it can't be helped... Stay on high alert, they might just be delaying to throw us off. Also, calculate how far they could have gotten since their departure. Draw up a time-table. If they are going to any alternate target, I want to know how long it would take and when they will arrive there. It probably won't help, but on the off chance that it does... Oh, and send a warning to the Etern. They might have turned around and gone home."

<Insert Requiem for a Dream ending theme>

The Bridge of the Cruiser NightWalker shoot violently, though, in the zero G environment, the crew didnt feel much momentum transfer.

Captain Hiachi had a grim expresion as his tactical officer, Lt. Commander Krinsaith rattled off a damage report.

"Captain, that last laser volley took down our shields"

Another jostle, this time even more violent and accompanied by an audible alarm notified the bridge crew of a hull breach

"Captain, we have missiles getting past the defens grid, hull breach on deck 3 sector 8, life support systems damaged, we are losing heat"

Captain Hiachi blanched white...

Another jostle

"Jump engines off line"

The Captain then realized... there was no way this ship would get out of the battle alive. He had a wife and three children on the planet below... He promised them he would die before he let any harm come to them, and he was going to make good on that promise. He looked at the picture of his family on his console, bolted down of course; and for the first time in his life a tear gathered in his eye and floated out from his face in a perfect sphere.

*All non essential personnel, abandon shi...*

Another violent shudder could be felt by the crew

"Intra ship comms are gone, and so...so are the lifepods"

Through the static, comms picked up a signal(Intership comms were still there)
It was Commodore Hikaris in the Dreadnought Killing Wind

"Captain Hiachi, your ship is heavily damaged, get to the lifepods!"

"It is to late to get to the lifepods, we have no intra ship comms and our lifesupport is gone... there is nothing left to do except.."

With that, another missile took out their intership comms

On the killing wind

Hiachi?! HIACHI!!!

NightWalker

"Commander Lestin, give me ramming speed" Hiachi said, his voice cracked and wavered as he said it, it was the only way...

"Target?" replied Lestin, his face and voice grim, his skin coloration reflecting the fear that was all to evident on all of them.

"That Titan Class Dreadnought" he said, physically pointing at a Krell vessel well within visual range. Weapons fire poured out from it at multiple targets. It it wasnt eh Harbinger of his doom, Captain Hiachi, Aldus Hiachi woulkd have been awed by its design and construction.

"Yes captain."

The ships massive ion engines lit up the cold vacuum of space. accelerating the massive warship closer and closer to the speed of light with every ion magnetically propelled into the vacuum of space. Throughout the cold blackness of space, missiles flew in endless streams from warships still in tact, while the dying vented plasma, atmosphere... and men, surrenduring them to the void forever. Beams of coherent light, invisible to the eye until they struck their targets, lanced out, vaporizing all in their path.

It was one of these that now struck the NightWalker a beam of light so hot it easily surpassed the temperature of a yellow dwarf star. A star like the sun, only a few minutes away.

It raked across the ships crystaline surface. The wull was very good at scattering these sorts of beams, but the heat was so great that it excited the molecules locked together in formation. Causing them to rapidly break their bonds and go careening into space. The beam cut a massive gouge in the ships hull as it moved through space. Atmosphere vented, crewmen and marines on the outer portions of that deck lucky enough to not be killed by the initial impact, were sucked out into the void of space, only to freeze ashyxiate in the universe's cold black embrace.

Krinsaith called out the damage report, not like it mattered...

A Krell fighter wizzed past, firing into the bare naked hull, but the weapons systemd on the dying cruiser were still intact. And whether that vessel held a pilot, or a programmed computer ceased to be relevent as it was rendered into its component particles.

The cruiser cointinued to accelerate, faster and faster and faster, its guns continiously pouring fire into smaller vessles out of pure spite. Captain Hiachi had torn the picture of his family from his console, and held it lovingly in his hands. Stroking the picture of his wife with a tender bruch of his taloned finger. His life, and all his accomplishmens flashed before his eyes. From his first steps, and words, to the first time he jumped from atree and his first day at school. His graduation.. and his promotion from Commander, to Captain.

"I love you" he whispered to his wife, across the void

Seconds later, one could spit from one ship, to the other. The cruisers hull impacted the Dreadnoughts shields. The shields flared, the energy rippeling outward like the waves on a pond, before it spider cracked and broke under the strain. The hull of he cruiser also began to crack, its crystaline structure being brittle and susceptable to this sort of damage. However, it didnt matter, the act was done. A tiny fraction of a second later the two massive behemouths impacted. For a fraction of a second one could have heard the metallic groan as the Titan's hull tried in vain to withstand the forces it was under. But it was never designed for this type of strain, and that section, to the stern of the vessel near the engines, broke. It fragmented into millions of peices along with the NightWalker And just before he was vaporized, Captain Hiachi knew that even if his wife and children would never be safe.. it wasnt that he gave up... he never surrendured. And neither, would they.

The Cruiser Nightwalker was no more, and the Titan, was a dead hulk.

The battle was drawing to a close, with hald the Dreadnoughts gone, and the others under heavy fire, the battle was lost. However the Draconis made the other side pay in blood for every inch of space.

One the Monocoran side, casualties were lighter and the other side payed more dearly in ships than the Krell had, however, when the Krell hit , they would play hammer to the monocoran anvil. And all would be lost.

Therefore, the remained of the fleet... pulled the last bit of energy from their reactors, and jumped to hyperspace. They chose life... as dead men cannot seek revenge for fallen comrades.

(I expect high casualties in capships from you two when this is over and done with)

"Sir, missiles!"

Santiago nodded. The range was closing fast, he'd timed his manuever wrong and screwed up. His fleet was supposed to literally pass through the Draconis fleet, bringing him as close as physically possible and getting massive shooting time. Now, however, it seemed like he would come exceedingly close, but not intersect, and in fact pass behind the Dracs.

The missle swarm, now lacking the over-awing massive numbers it had before, was highly devastated by the time it arrived at the fleet, and even then it had been fired over too close a range to achieve the same effect it had had before. The resulting hits battered the Dreadnoughts, but hurt few other ships especially after the missiles that missed were sent through a second round of helish point defense fire.

"Short range lasers are now in optimum firing range, shields are at 19% sir."

"Well let loose with everything, and get those god damned dreadnoughts!"

"Sir! They're fleeing!"

"Well chase them!"

"Sir, hyperdrive ports!"

"FUCK IT! What's Bishop's status?"

"Shields at ten percent over there."

"Damnit! We lose anything else?"

"Just another HC, heavy damage, should be salvagable."

"Right, get us out of the Planet Defenses. Then we sit tight, I've got to report to the priest."

CNS Hermes Defender
"We've got them, Admiral. They're breaking in front of our fire. We'll have them in a matter of minutes."

"Excellent. Keep fire up and maintain contact with the Monacorans. How are they doing over there?"

"Comms report they're hurt, but they're winning their skirmish as well. Looks like this is a victory. Hold on, dead ahead."

"What is it?"

"A cruiser. They're ramming!"

"Back away quick, angle shields forward. Concentrate all fire, I don't want that thing to get through."

"Concentrating.... too late!" The Draconis cruiser plowed into the front of the Titan, sending steams of fire into space. Structural supports gave way as the front of the Titan crumpled, sending metal flying out into space. The Titan shuddered, pushed back and away by the momentum transfer from the cruiser. It was a good thing the bridge was aft, or else the ship would have been dead in space.

"Damage report!"

"We lost the front 80 decks. Venting atmosphere and heat, bad. Locking down as best we can, emergency bulkheads in place."

"What about power?"

"Not good. Three generators are down, and we took a lot of structural damage to the grid. We're running at a quarter capacity, tops."

"Shields? Engines?"

"No shields, no weapons. Engines a bit, but its too early to tell if we can make a jump. We could work sublight, though."

"Are we in danger of losing life support in the areas that are still habitable?"

"Not now, no."

"Then we sit. Re-establish comms as quickly as you can."

CNS Gorgon Defender

"Sir, the Hermes is down. She's got a few systems up, but she's just salvage now."

"Dammit. Well, we worry about them later. We almost have thoes lizards! Increase firepower, I want to make them pay."

"Yes sir!" The guns let loose full, making the Draconis pay in fire for what had happened to their capital ship. A few last minutes of bombardment, and the Draconis fleet turned and ran. They couldn't inflict enough damage anymore to make staying and fighting worth it. With the Krell batteries pounding away until the last possible second, the Draconis pulled away and made a jump.

For a minute, the Krell stood in space, the crews finally allowing themselves to breathe after a fierce half hour of fighting. Then the ships formed up and moved away. The Hermes was able to make it to the edge of the system on its own power, where crews were rapidly transfered from the Hermes to other Titans. Techs swarmed all over the engines of the Hermes, readying the engines for a jump. A lot of power diverting had to take place, but the engine housings themselves were relatively undamaged because they did not receive the full impact of the cruiser. It took a little over an hour, but finally the Krell ships were able to limp back home.

Missiles and fighters exploded all around the KSN armada. The ships were doubling and tripling up on their firepower, quickly destroying enemy vessels.

"Continue closing with the enemy fleet, divert emergency power to shields"

The fleets escorts picked off the missiles, protecting the valuable cruisers and capital ships.
The capships continued firing, doubling up on their targets, inficting heavy damage on the UP fleet

"How long until we're in range?"
"One minute at max burn"

"Keep going, and keep firing"
An allied frigate exploded, just as the admiral watched the death of another enemy cruiser
"Sir we have a jump plot mapped out. Most of the fighters are in." The Admiral nodded. If they closed to gun range, they would die. No if's and's or but's about it. The Fusion Guns had no rival in that the UP navy could summon at the time and he did not have enough cap ships for this job. He wanted to fight to close and knife the enemy to death like he did at Amarr. But he could not.

"Drop interdictors and job on the mark... Mark." The field died and the UP task force Wild Hunt leapt into the embrace of HyperSpace dancing away from their heavyer oppotents.

Defensive duties had been turned over to the Union ships. Better to use them for that then send them on attacks and suck the Union into the Unification side of the war thought Admiral Joseph Mendoza of 4th fleet. Afterwards he had gathered the ships mostly crusiers that were not assigned to a fleet and gathered them in the system, Admiral Tzu would enjoy that.

[Asgard Expeditionary Force]

The Nashtar had misjudged the point of arrival, not by much over stellar distances but by enough. A few ships took long range hits but they were merely a nuisance. Likewise the attempts by the planet based batteries to hit the Asgard fleet were futile. All they did was mark their position. Good to know but of no real effect on the battle. It would be decided by the Fleets and the fighters.

The swarms from planetside would have a long range engagement if they wanted to come out and play. Part deliberate intent, part necessity. Von Bek had taken them in at the edge of the hyper-limit, as he had done in the PIR. It was wise move for the engagement they wished to fight.

* * *

"All ships: target your opening salvos onto the shipyards. Then roll the Specials. I want all ships to target the carriers. They're the highest priority. After that the heavies. But kill the carriers!"

* * *

The first Asgard salvos rippled off aimed into the system. An flurry of capital missles launched from the full pod loads of the SDs and BCs slipped in. They accellerated hard then dropped to a low power evasive. Until the terminal run they would be fiendishly hard to intercept.

Of course the follow up to that would be even harder. Double shot pods, loaded with Asgard Kincaid torpedoes, rolled next and the internal launchers cycled the smaller missles up. Every man in the fleet waited with baited breath.

And they launched. The whole force of missles from every CA, BC, and SD(p) hurtled at 6c towards the Nashtar carriers.

Orodan, Nashtar Star Cluster

"Sir, those missiles are entering Kincaid drive."

"Order Restrainer and Pinion to power up their interdiction fields, low power, wide dispersal," ordered Admiral Barclay. "All carriers are to fall to the back of the formation. Order Anvil, Tongs, and all the Novas to give them a volley; all ships weapons free."

"Aye, sir."

"Fighters and bombers are not to engage until the enemy is within general weapons range."

E-45 jammers switched on as the Binder class interdictors began to power up their gravity wells. Drawing on the knowledge of Kincaid torpedoes passed to them from the Veithans through the UP, the jamming craft also began to jam hypercomm bands, attempting to play havoc with any conceivable form of tracking that the torpedoes might be using. Point defense on the warships and orbital stations switched on as the missiles approached, firing AMMs first, followed by PD guns. Missiles also swarmed from the missile cruisers and destroyers, reaching out across the void for the Asgard invaders. 2238 missiles streaked back across the void towards the expeditionary force as the launching ships behind cycled new missiles into their launch tubes.

The Asgard were ready. The second salvo had already been targetted at the interdictors and a second volley of Kincaid torpedoes, every bit as strong as the first crashed into the two interdictors. What had been overkill against carriers were pure murder against the interdictors.

* * *

"Make sure we have all the interdictors then fire on the battleships. All ships are to make 1500gees and hold the range. We'll do better in a missle duel for now."

Australis.
Bridge of the Killer of Enslavers

They were losing. That much had been expected beforehand and Siratrex was glad that in spite of being vastly outnumbered the situation still hadn't turned into a full blown disaster.

He had seen the Ouster attack coming. After all it was the kind of tactics the voidworms had designed their ships for and the Alliance had studied their tactics for months. As the Ousters opened fire with their alpha strikes, he gave orders for the fighter squadrons that had stayed until then near the attack carriers to block the small craft attack that was most certainly coming through them.

Three cruisers had been disabled during the initial attack and they had been destroyed by the Ouster bombers that followed the attack. Two other cruisers had suffered so much damage at the hands of the bombers that it was extremely doubtful that they would survive the battle without shields and extensive hull damage. It was almost a miracle that in spite of having lost more than twenty frigates only seven of them had been escort frigates. And six scout frigates had survived which was also good considering what was about to come.

And as the Ouster bombers crossed the holes in the White Sun formation, clouds of Swiftdeath interceptors engaged the Ouster Nachtjager while Revenge strike fighters attacked the bombers. The Ousters had a considerable numerical advantage that would have been even greater hadn't it been for the fighter forces of the battlestations equivalent to that of an attack carrier. Of course, the Ouster attack had some success -particularly because of the gaps opened in the point defense screen by their previous strike and the narrow space between ships that ensured that almost everything would damage in one way or another the White Sun-, but it was much smaller than what it could have been.

As the bombers left the area it was clear that their number had been seriously reduced, but in their wake they had caused enormous damage. To their list they could now add that the Swarm Nest, a carrier, had lost all shielding and suffered some hull damage from the Ouster bombers and both dreadnoughts saw their shielding levels drop dangerously.

They had reached the turning point in the battle. Until now they had been able to face the Hajr in an straight combat with some success. Now the voidworms were in condition to steamroll the White Suns with their superior numbers while suffering relatively few casualties. It was most fortunate that the 4th fleet decided to arrive at that point.

One light hour away from Australis, transpace portals opened and the 4th fleet entered realspace. They disengaged their warp drives seconds later, upon arrival on the outskirts of the Ouster interdiction field. They were in a position perpendicular to that of the fighting fleets and in what would normally had been considered extreme missile range. In Talathrant, the 5th had learned that firing from such distances was a wonderful way of wasting missiles. But the situation was slightly different here.

The scout frigates were fast and had more or less decent shielding, but they traded most of their firepower for a very powerful sensor suit. A sensor suit powerful enough for, for example, burn through Ouster decoys. As the 4th fleet prepared itself to fire its missiles, teams of three frigates marked two of the Ouster capital ships. Cataphracts were the intended target, but as one of the present ones had retreated from the front lines, an attack carrier took its place.

The 5th fired one hundred and ten hunter killers, half against each target. The Ousters had perhaps two or three seconds before the impact. Some of the frigates would die to either Ouster retaliation or fighter attack... but those capital ships had been effectively marked dead.

After firing the initial barrage, the White Suns intended to repeat the combo if such a thing was possible in time and then the 4th would activate its sublight engines and engage the Ousters from below in the shortest time possible.

Unfortunately, bigger problems were on their way. As the 4th fired its missiles, Australis sensor network detected a faint beep in the outer limits of its range. Another War Cluster was on its way and it would arrive in slightly over sixteen minutes.

OOC: Most damage goes to lighter ships. 1 attack carrier that is at most at 80% efficiency and without shields. 2 dreadnoughts with weakened shields. 5 cruisers dead or disabled and a seriously weakened escort screen. And I would like to point that my capital ships (and the Constellations if I manage to built them in the future) carry two shield systems and have some seriously above average durability.
By teams I don't mean that they are together (in fact it is just the opposite), but that they coordinate the moment they mark your ships. And I won't buy that your ships destroy them all, particularly because you were changing for AM weapons at the end of your last post.

Australis System
Command Deck, Cataphract Heroic Sacrifice

<<Diaspora's Harbinger to Cluster Command, we have taken severe hits, point defense is overworked, incoming missiles at *static*>>

Miyako exhaled heavily. This was the first time a Cataphract had fallen to enemy fire. A devastating blow. Reports were coming in from across the fleet.

<<Squadron X3 reporters home vessel Red Queen destroyed by enemy fire. Repeat, home vessel destroyed...>>

<<Slayer of Weaklings reportes target locked. Battleswarm Ready to fire.>>

<<Crimson Fang reports target locked.Battleswarm Ready to fire.>>

<<Cruiser Swarm 4.4 reports target locked. Ready to fire.>>

<<Cruiser Swarm 4.5 reports target locked. Ready to fire.>>

Miyako gave rapid orders. It would be too late to save the Harbinger and the Queen, but it must be done to prevent a second volley from making it thrrough- two of the fleet's interdictors switched from wide-net to tight-net effect.

<< All vessels. Fire.>>

Across the Hajr fleet, the cruisers and capital ships of the Hajr discharged their fearsome forewards armament into the already heavil damaged enemy capital ships. Most were lightly shielded, if at all- and this would be the coup de grace. As enemy vessel's systems faced failure, their M/AM reactors would lose containment. Casualties would be heavy.

Fighters and bomberrs wheeled around, abanding their attack runs, to strike the enemy interdictors. All fire was focused on two of the little craft.[/i][/b]

NRS Horizon, Orodan, Nashtar Star Cluster

"Sir, we can't hold..."

The Kincaid torpedoes came on, half spoofed by jamming, a few more caught by PD, but there were still too many. And they hit.

"DAMAGE REPORT," screamed Rear Admiral Haig, already afraid he knew too much of the answer.

"Port hangar bays are simply gone! Hull breaches on decks 10 through 24, sections 8 through 46! Engines 1, 3, and 4 are offline. Structural integrity will be compromised if we keep running engine 2."

"Cut engines."

"Sir, the situation is..."

"I KNOW the situation is untenable, Captain!" Haig grabbed for his intercom. "This is Admiral Haig. All hands abandon ship! I repeat, all hands abandon ship!" He slammed down the headset, having yelled into the microphone without bothering to put it on his head. "Get to your escape pods. MOVE!" The bridge crew needed no further urging. They all left their stations and went for the starboard-mounted bridge escape pod bank, the admiral close behind. He paused, one hand hanging on the rim of the escape pod hatch, and looked back at his bridge one last time. A secondary explosion shuddered through the ship as he watched. He swung into the pod, sealed the hatch, and hit the release lever.

Pods poured from various points on the ship as laden C-420s emerged from the forward hangar bay.

NRS Discovery

The deck shuddered beneath Admiral Barclay's feet as the missiles hit. "Damage report!"

The Discovery had been further back in a lower planetary orbit than the Horizon, causing the torpedoes to go through more jamming and further point defense, but they were still to fast to stop all of them. "Shields are gone, sir. Hull breach on Deck 14, Sections 17 and 18. The bay doors on Hangar Four are damaged and the number two door is jammed. Gun batteries two, four, and six are damaged and cannot be fired. Engine three is damaged; the engine room has shut it down."

"Take us into a lower orbit. I want that planet between this carrier and the next volley."

"Aye, sir." The carrier dropped below the orbit level of the shipyards and began to surpass them as it consequently cut a shorter path around Orodan.

"Permission granted"

Orodan, Nashtar Star Cluster

"Give the bastards another volley, all launchers," snarled Commodore Brand as he watched the Horizon twist in space, clearly dying. The Asgard had made one crucial tactical error, though: They had struck at targets that did not pose a direct threat to them. As a result, the fleet still had nearly all it's available throw weight.

2238 more missiles flew from the assembled defense fleet towards the invaders, focusing on those that had launched Kincaid torpedoes.

"Have all the drones and decoys been launched?"

"Yes admiral"

The KSN armada had just finished laying a system of probes around the system, and decoys behind the dead moon

"Move us out"

The KSN armada moved out from behind the moon, and made a short hyperspace jump to the outer edge of the system

"Power down all weapons, and go into stealth mode. Don't let anyone see us"
The fleet went into stealth mode, while the decoys went active, making it look as if the fleet was hiding behind the moon

Von Bek privately fumed that the second carrier was only maimed and not killed. Oh, it was a nice start but not good enough. But there would be more.

* * *

The Nashtar salvo slide over the Asgard fleet. They hadn't miscalculated in the slightest; Von Bek had simply played the numbers game. It was the sort of calculating move that he was known for and he had pulled it off.

The Asgard fleet had nearly two hundred escort vessels, most dancing attendance on the capital ships. It was a classic wall of battle and it did it's job. The dispersed Nashtar fire was first lured away by the blaring sirens of decoys, blinded by ECM, and last they faced the gauntlet of counter missles and point defense. It was a hellish journey for the missles and the simple disparity of numbers told.

The Fangs did their job admirably and only a few of the missles made it through. Several escorts and heavy cruisers were hit and at least two Destroyer-Escorts were so badly holed they would be write offs. The worst hit was to the heavy-cruiser Barham which had the misfortune to catch a missle in her boat bay. The resulting damaged sheered through much of her structure and cut control runs and passages. Still, she limped along.

* * *

"All ships, lay a conventional salvo on the lead battleship. I want her dead. Once she goes up all ships are to withdraw. Warn the fighter to make a combat landing."

* * *

Once again three thousand missles streaked out, all targetted on the lead battleship of the Nashtar fleet. The conventional missles were all set to redline their drives in a furious burst of acceleration, suicidal computers driving them down on the ship. It would be some spectacular fireworks indeed.

OOC:

1 CA gutted and a write off
2 CA damaged
2 DDE written off, badly lamed
8 DDE heavily damaged

[Blackbird Yards, Odin Orbit]

For a few breif days construction on the framing of the SDs currently growing in the yards was stopped. Few knew why and none were talking; the men and women of Blackbird were a discrete bunch.

After the pause the hulks were unceremoniously hauled off. None had gotten even far enough to be formally named. In their place was begun four new hulls of a much different type. The employees wondered, furitively what the new ships were but they were still working largely in the dark.

Orodan, Nashtar Star Cluster

Barclay watched the data sent to his ship through the sensor relays in the system, paying careful attention to the Asgard formation much as his sensor operators did.

"Sir, this is odd. It looks like the Asgard fleet is..."

"Comms, Conn. The Asgard fleet is moving along the hyperlimit and hasn't closed with the planet. They don't plan on staying. Dispatch the fighters and bombers on their strike before they escape."

"Aye, sir."

Several hundred B-95s, the same bomber type of which three squadrons had killed an Overseer battleship in the course of the Machine Wars, leaped towards the Asgard fleet, missiles armed and ready to fire, quickly followed by A-127s and escorting fighters. Another missile swarm was readied and fired behind them. Several F-235s fired on passing Asgard conventional missiles.
__________________________________________________________________________

They weren't the only ones. Defense guns and missiles from the destroyer screen lanced out at the missiles, then from the cruisers, then from the battleships and heavy defense stations themselves. Jamming caused them to go wild, chaff drew off a few, and many, many more were swatted from the void by defenses. At the very last, the Torrent class defense station orbiting nearest to the battleship formation turned on a powerful sensor beacon, drawing some towards its heavily shielded and massively armored self. But some, inevitably, got through.

NRS Defender

"Shift shield power to the port side. Fire chaff."

"Aye, sir."

"Incoming!"

"All hands, brace for impact!"

The mighty battleship shuddered as a long series of missiles hit it. "Shields failing, sir." A few more impacts. "Shields have failed. Hull is beginning to take hits. Armor holding."

"Sir, the Foucault reports taking missile hits. Her hull is breached, but the damage is under control. We've lost several frigates from the picket line."

"Finish that damn battleship. Ram the wedges down her throat if need be! I want her dead damn it." Von Bek bellowed "And tell the Fangs to look sharp with those fighters."

* * *

A last missle salvo lashed out at the wounded Nashtar ship. It was a bit more ragged but it was still an massive salvo. This was do or die time and it seemed that every one knew it.

The Nashtar fighters and bombers soon entered a deadly duel. F-14s from the Asgard carriers immediately began pouncing on the Nashtar fighters. Lead by the combat trained pilots of First Fleet the Asgard held their own against the incoming Nashtar. Sure there were leakers but that what the mass of escorts surrounding the Battle Line was for.

And they proved themselves effective enough once again.

NRS Defender

"Sir, another volley. It looks like they plan to kill us, sir!"

"Calm down, son," answered Commodore Brand to the green lieutenant. "Admiral Fieldhouse will be here any minute, and then we see how this goes. Admiral Barclay doesn't think they're showing the stomach for an even fleet engagement, and that's what they'll have if they don't run soon. Full countermeasures. Helm, roll the ship. Present our undamaged starboard side."

"Aye, sir."

"Can we get power to the starboard shields?"

"Yes sir, the starboard generators are fine. Power to starboard shield grid." The starboard shields flared white before fading to transparency, but the port side, suffering from overloaded generators following the missile strikes, remained unshielded.

Weapons were still free. Missiles were cycled into the launchers and flew towards the enemy in a ragged salvo. A SMAC gunner on one of the Torrent stations even released his weapon, sending the massive 20 ton shell soaring out of the mass driver on an unguided course towards the Asgard fleet at .15c. He didn't expect to hit, but if he did, the results would not be pleasant for his victim.

The Asgard missiles flew in at the Defender in a line more ragged than it's predecessors. Again jammed, picked off, and diverted, still some made it through the screens. "Crunch time," muttered Brand as the CIWS guns on his battleship engaged.

The ship shook a second time as missiles slammed into the shields in a ragged line. "Shields weakening. Shields gone, sir. Hits to the hull. Hull holding..." There was a massive shudder as the ship convulsed from a hit aft. "SHIT! Engine block is hit, sir! Engines 2, 4, 5, and 6 are damaged and offline!" The guns continued to fire as stragglers came in. Only one made it past, shuddering against the armor. "Sir, the ship is crippled. Main engine power is offline."

"Maneuvering thrusters?"

"Still operational."

"Lower orbit. I want us out of their line of fire."

"Aye, sir."
