I'm thinking of getting a DSL line for Xbox live... I'm pretty computer savy but have never owned a DSL, and had a few question. If anyone can help it'll save me a call to Bell. Bell techs can answer question, but they are essentially clueless people reading answers from a binder. Their answers are also taylored to give *themselves* the least problems...
Basically the Xbox and computer won't be next to each other, they're in different rooms:
- can I move the DSL modem from one telephone jack to the other?
- will a 20-foot (or so) network cable from the modem to the computer work? Bell's website said something about the computer being within 6-feet of the jack. My computer is not next to the jack, and I'm using a telephone cable extension. If the network cable can be long, I might also just run a cable from one room to the other and leave the modem in the same spot... I don't see why this wouldn't work, I've run 120-foot long cables to network computers w/o problems, is DSL different? I think this might be a case of Bell trying to cover their ass and avoid problems.
Any info would be appreciated!

Depending on the Provider, Yes, Gernealy Its ALWAYS Yes- can I move the DSL modem from one telephone jack to the other?
Sounds like covering thier ass but if they are not just buy yourself A Repeater toss it inbetween the two(Phone and Computer) and that will solve your problem- will a 20-foot (or so) network cable from the modem to the computer work? There is no problem with a 120-ft run of CAT5. I doubt you'd even need the repeater, though it couldn't hurt if you were getting problems.
As for the DSL hookup, you may want to keep it close to the walljack as possible, but again, I doubt it matters that much. DSL is sensitive to distance, but not that sensitive.

Don't know if this is true in the US but here the dsl modem must be connected to the first phone jack.
My dsl modem has a standard rj45 connection and I have built a home NW using only the dsl modem, firewall/router and a switch.
The standard cat5/rj45 cable has a range of 100m ~328ft

I've moved my DSL modem from place to place without incident. I've plugged it into three different phone jacks, they all work.

They should work fine there is no magic principle when it comes to DSL, The acutal Trickery occurse at the Local Switching office NOT at your house(I should bloody well know, I had to tear out a wall at my old place to run the wiring myself in for an extra phone jack)
