DOOM 3 Final Verdict?

Post by Lord Poe »

So, does DOOM 3 live up to its name? Is it as fun as the old game was?

I only played the first couple levels, but I don't think it's AS fun as the original. Good on its own, but very linear and not very fast-paced.

In my opinion nothing can match the visceral joy of DOOMs 1&2. But 3 comes close.

Hmm....am I the only one that likes the game? I like how you can control PCs in-game, I like the flashlight being a major part of the action, and...yeah. I haven't played the whole thing since I only played it on my friend's computer. I like Half-Life SP better, but then again I think HL SP was the best ever created.

I played it for 15 minutes at a store and 20 minutes at a friends. Strangely enough, I did NOT enjoy switching between a gun or a flash light (Where the fuck is night vision or thermal or FUCKING DUCT TAPE?!) fighting spiders in near identical looking indoor rooms.

The antics of Doom 3 get old, fast. I prefered the shoot 'em up style of the first two Dooms a lot more. I mean, running around in the dark chasing after an Imp is one thing, but mowing down a room full of zombies with your chaingun/plasma rifle, I have found, is a much more enjoyable experience.

Doom3's gameplay is pretty straight forward, just walk from place to place getting ambushed by enemies, you get used to them popping out of every corner to scare you.

But what really impressed me was the engine.
ID makes great game engines, I'm no expert on this, but it's probably what ID makes the most money from.

So I'm looking forward to seeing what other things can be done with this engine.

My thoughts exactly. Don't get me wrong, I still love this game, but that flashlight thing is real annoying. I wish this game had co-op mode, so I could resume my antics of shooting my friend in the back while he thinks we are working together

Doom 3 was an incredibly good game. Sure they tend to use cheap scare tactics, but they work. The combat is straight forward, but not overly simplistic. The physics engine can be nice, but isn't emphasized. Whats good about the game is the gameplay is generaly fun, the graphics are incredible, and its got a fairly involving story.

I had fun. The single player campaign was great, and quite enjoyable as a whole.

Not too much replayability though, in my opinion. If they get some really great mods for that game, that might change.

I haven't finished beating it yet, but I've had a hell of a time playing it. I thought it was a lot of fun myself. Nothing like walking into a room with a plummenting fall, demons spawning and shotgun. Woot

The game actualy has a fair bit of replayability. It rewards you for being curious and searching around. I've found some really nift secrets this way. You also notice things you might have missed previously. Like what is written on some of the computer screens. One has a message that wasn't even finished. Someone was writing that he heard gun fire approaching his position and he ne-

Stuff like that.

I like doom 3, it's got great effects and good atmosphere. Yeah, the level design sucks but the rest of the game's spot on. Can't wait for HL though.

Actually, there is a 'duck tape mod' that sticks the light on top of the gun.

My problem is that Doom3 wasn't trying to be Doom 2. If you want to mow down thousands of enemies with an oversized chaingun, go buy Serious Sam. In fact, just go buy Serious Sam.

I didn't LOVE Doom3, but I didn't mistake it for something it wasn't.

I never look at mods while buying a game. Besides, even if Doom 3 features a billion lightbulbs, the action is walk through endless corridors of small rooms fighting waves (that spawn behind you silently???) of monsters again and again. Tons of first person shooters have moved beyond that.

Haven't played it, but I've once heard the game called a tech demo for the engine itself -- which is where id will probably make most of their money.

A Game that can be moded is a game that can survive. That is part of the selling factor of a game. I've bought some games not because I enjoyed the game that came in the box, but because I enjoy the mods it lets me play.

BF1942 is ok, Desert Combat is incredible.

Yeah, but should you have to go to a mod in order for the game to not be annoying as the flashlight thing is?
