Alex Baldwin's political prediction

Post by Darth Wong »

Last year, I remember Alec Baldwin coming on "The Daily Show" and making his prediction for the 2004 election. "The Democrats will lose big," he said (or words to that effect; my recollection of precise phrases is obviously not perfect), because they have gotten away from their values and are trying to appeal to everyone at once. And this will ultimately be a good thing because it will force them to find their values again and actually stand for something in 2008.

Looks like some of those actors are better students of politics than we give them credit for

I imagine they'll lose and a Bill Clinton-type figure - perhaps Barack Obama - will show up to start revitalizing the party.

I like Obama, but I think that he's going to stay in the Senate for a while before running for president. He can do a lot of good in there, and I think he knows that.

The longer he stays in the senate, the more slime will accumulate on him. Senators don't get elected president, as we're seeing. Why NOT Obama '08? If Kerry goes down in flames, he's going to take a lot of the old guard with him.

Wasn't there a B5 episode with commentary like that? IIRC, it was in the 5th season so no one probably remembers it.

I dunno, but it is much too easy to dismiss actors as being ignorant of politics. They may not be geniuses, but they have a lot of free time on their hands to study this sort of thing if they're motivated; far more than the average Joe with a full-time job, that's for sure.

Of course, their weakness is an inability to relate to that average Joe. They only know about the lifestyle of being either rich or dirt-poor. But that doesn't mean an actor can automatically be assumed to be politically ignorant, the way some people often do.

Don't tell anybody. There's a secret Democrat actor breeding program. We're trying to build a cadre of beautiful liberals to woo the masses by 2010.

I don't like him, but he's a brillant actor. For politics, he's gotten his wienny smashed for the last decade on it, so I'd imagine that he's got his head out of his ass by now.

He's still extreme in his views, imo.

Hmm... It may be working. Didn't I read that Rebecca Romijn-Stamos did an ad for moveon.org?

Bullshit. If I don't get President John McCain in 2008, I'm starting a rebellion of one.
If Religion and Politics were characters on a soap opera, Religion would be the one that goes insane with jealousy over Politics' intimate relationship with Reality, and secretly murder Politics in the night, skin the corpse, and run around its apartment wearing the skin like a cape shouting "My votes now! Is he still going to leave the country if Bush gets re-elected?

Seeings how he said he'd leave the country if Bush GOT elected, four years ago, somehow I doubt it.

Yeah. The Pussyboy. Seriously, I still remember his whining and how fast he changed his tune when Bush really did win.

But seriously, I think this is just a case of even a broken clock being right twice a day. Considering Baldwin's politcal blabbing (but not necessarily his actions) I'd say it's less intelligence and more complaining that the far left fringe is being ignored.
