I thinking that while this is a bad thing, it can be salvaged. The more these things happen, the more the people will challenge it in the courts, and eventually we'll get a SCOTUS case*, where with any luck, they'll be shot down, alot of assholes will bitch about judicial activism, and these bits will go away. After all, if this sort of things don't happen, cases against them can't happen, and the SCOTUS can't rule them unconstitutional.

*Note, this assumes that if Bush wins, next year when those three justices retire he won't stack the Supreme Court with every ultra-conservative Christian Right judge that Congress will let him get his grubby little mitts on. Then bad shit will happen.

Additionally, the reason given for why the most secular, most sinful parts of the nation don't get hit as often is that they're too fargone. They wouldn't learn anything by being the brunt of God's lack of protection (because God does NOT do these things, he merely allows them to happen). Strange. I spent one year as an exchange student in Abbeville. Neither was I forced to go to church, nor did I notice any resentments against gays during school. (Then again, I am not gay so I might not have noticed). It might also be that I had a lot of luck with my host family and my friends at School.
