I don't mean the debates over issues or platforms. But the arguments over which campaign has more assholes than the other.

These days politics is all about petty bickering of us vs. them. And its the media's fault. The media doesn't want to bother to cover issues and do in-depth analysis of the policies of important people, even the presidential candidates! They want screaming pundits and SCANDAL, cuz that makes for good, cheap, quick, easy, sensationalist TV. The media is acting as a filter, but not in the way it should. Instead of filtering out the BS the parties throw and looking for the truth, they filter out the truth and deliver the party line of both parties in as explosive a way as possible. When people like Bill O'Reilly and Ann Coulter are head figures in the national media, you know that there are some real problems with how the process is being carried out, and a major disconnect in how the message is getting to the people.

Are politics any dirtier now in America than they have been in the past? Not really, in comparison to the various political machines- Tammany Hall, the Ward One elections of Chicago, graveyard voting, etc.

What's different now? Disclosure. Now every disgusting detail of a politician's rise to power is available at our fingertips. So except for the most hopelessly partisan, the illusion that the candidate from Party A is an upstanding Christian gentleman without a fault while the candidate from Party B is the SPAWN OF SATAN is being removed.

Long term, it's a good thing. The parties will learn to stop serving up halfwits that anybody with net access can rip to shreds after a bit of Googling.

In the meantime though, we end up with sausage-manufacturing festivals like the current one.
