ROTJ DVD New Ships? (pic heavy)

Post by Laughing Mechanicus »

Well, haven't posted here in quite some time, but while watching the new DVDs today I noticed a couple of things I couldn't pass up sharing.

Firstly during the massing of the rebel fleet, I noticed no less than 5 ships I couldn't recognise. Here are some screencaps of them, apologies in advance that they are slightly squished sidways:

Image

The top right one looks like it could be a MC ship of some sort, but it looks a different shape than the others. The second looks almost like a Carrack cruiser, which is spooky because the Carrack is an EU invention if I recall correctly. Coming into view on the top right is a ship seen better in the next picture:

Image

Now the ship in the top right is more clear and you can see it has moved position meaning it is not part of the MC ship behind it as I first thought it was. In the top left is what looks like a Corellian corvette but seems to have a modified engine and cockpit section, my thought is it is perhap one of the prototype corvette models they made for ANH re-used as a background filler. However the most interesting to me is the ship in the bottom left, which looks stikingly like a Dreadnought, which again I thought was an EU invention (although I heard it may have been inspred by a ROTJ concept sketch?).

Image

And finally a picture from during the battle of another unkown ship, I put 2 different shots of it there so you could see the "wings" it has on its side, I have no idea what it could be, but from its motion it definately seemed more like a model than a matte painting.

Now it has been over a year since I was able to watch the films on video, so can anyone tell me if these were present in the originals/SEs or if they are new for the DVD?

Also at the end of TESB you can make out the mystery rebel ships much more clearly, I'll take some more shots of them if people want.

Oh and mods, if the images are too big just say and I'll change them to links.

Bob Brown found most of those years ago, but never anything close to that detailed. Your circled one is the "Y headed corvette" and appeared on hyperspace.

I have never seen your second dreadnaught thing and more importantly, your first MC cruiser/ football of doom are COMPLETE unknowns. Maybe ROTS ships spliced in? Ships we could never see clearly enough before? No idea.

Good work.

Goin' on the old and new editions of the Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels...

I'd say the second ship of the first image looks like a Dreadnought instead of a Carrack: the forward section seems a bit too rounded for it to be a Carrack, and it also has something of a hump at the base of the main body where it meets the forward section. It'd fit in better with the Alliance fleet than a Carrack, since those things are relatively new as compared to the old 'nought. They also say they chopped the things up quite a bit in certain instances, so that could account for some visual discrepencies.

The top-left craft from the second image...I'd say it's a Mobquet Medium Transport, due to the blocky engine and central section and the rounded command module. Lower center craft, Gallofree Yards Medium Transport, AKA, Rebel Transport, I'm inclined to think - it fits the profile fairly well. That, or just a MonCal cruiser.

As for the last, t'is anybody's guess, though it reminds me of something I saw on the Galactic Empire Data Base - or perhaps it's the infamous shoe, covered every which way with CGIs to hide its true nature?

No, as Ender said, it's a model: and we know what it looks like thanks to LF revealing it on Hyperspace.

It's been there since the original theatrical release.

While ILM says there's a shoe in ROTJ, damned if I haven't been looking for years and have yet to find the bastard. There's one in the Hoth asteroid field in ESB, though.

What about the Quasar Fire class? However the ship seems to have an elevated bridge structure ... I would say that that corvette is a standard one with tricky shadows.
Aaron Ash, could you create and post screenshots from TESB (the rebell fleet at the end)? There are rather interesting ships.
EDIT: Couldn't be that MC a Liberty type from an angled view?

TESB pics, I've resized these to their proper dimensions so I'll link them instead of screwing up the thread.

The first you can see a whole bunch of what are quite obviously matte painted in background ships, however the one in the second picture which is definately a model and comes quite close to the camera.

1st pic, wide view

2nd pic, close up of strange ship

Are you saying that it looked LIKE a Y-wing, or that it WAS a Y-wing?

I know what he's talking about. On my VHS I always assumed it was a Y-Wing as well.

Looked like one. If you pause, you can't see shit, and it zips by fast enough that you just see the basic shape. It always looked a little wierd, but I thought maybe the model was broken or something.

They are all present in the origionals, but due to lack of quality of VHS you cannot make them out in such detail. They are most likely kit bashes or unused concept designs. In the case of the Dreadnaught looking ship in ROTJ, it is probably a Calamari model that wasn't completed with enough surface detail to be used up close.

Is that possibly where the EU designs came from???

Can you take some screengrabs of the scene where the Falcon is running towards Endor and you can see the Rebel Fleet in front of it?

Nothing new, those ships has always been there (although the "Y-head corvette" looks somewhat bigger in frame now).

Aaron Ash: Thanks.

Is it possible that the third ship from the first RoTJ picture and the two background ships from the first TESB picture are the same? (I have that impression from the VHS, but if you watch closely (the RoTJ picure), there can be a rounded structure.) EDIT: No, they have different aft.

I know but like i said, this monitor here is crap (all dark) so i couldnt see the tail even if it was there. The sleek shape made me guess it might be a dauntless

The upper left, in the ESB screenshot, looks like a Zentrani battlecruiser. :D

Actually, why did you bother with magnification? The pictures you captured were of sufficient resolution.
