CNSNews.com) - Does Sen. John F. Kerry really own a "Communist Chinese assault rifle," as he suggested in an interview in the latest edition of Outdoor Life magazine?

The Second Amendment Foundation says if the senator does own such a rifle, it wants to know where Kerry keeps it, if it is legally registered, and how he got it into the United States.

"Senator Kerry's own words once again trip him up in an apparent hypocrisy," SAF Founder Alan Gottlieb said in a press release.

"Responding to a question from Outdoor Life about whether he is a gun owner, and if so, what's his favorite gun, Kerry strongly intimates he has an assault rifle, which is illegal to own both in Massachusetts and Washington, D.C."

The Kerry quote appears on Page 82 of the October issue of Outdoor Life. He told the magazine, "My favorite gun is the M-16 that saved my life and that of my crew in Vietnam. I don't own one of those now, but one of my reminders of my service is a Communist Chinese assault rifle."

Gottlieb called it another example of Kerry running on his Vietnam service history: "Now he's talking as if he's got an assault rifle stashed somewhere, while he's been railing against their ownership by other law-abiding American citizens," Gottlieb added.

Kerry supported an extension of the so-called assault weapons ban, which expired on Monday. Last week, at a campaign stop in St. Louis, he said, "As a hunter, I have never ever thought about going hunting with an AK-47 or an Uzi or anything else."

"Senator Kerry, where's the rifle?" Gottlieb asked. "In which one of your mansions are you hiding that gun? Why should it be okay for you to have a Communist Chinese assault rifle when you think nobody else should have one? And if you don't have one, why would you intimate to Outdoor Life that you do?"

Kerry has made it a point to appeal to gun owners by staging a number of gun-friendly photo-ops on the campaign trail.

In Kerry's defense, it could be a DEWAT that's legally registered with the ATF.

Such guns are subject to NFA recordkeeping but are exempt from the taxes on transfers. If it's an unregistered DEWAT or a live Chinese AK, he's just confessed to a federal felony.

On the other hand, his story about the gun could be bullshit just like his stories about Christmas in Cambodia and being in Vietnam when MLK was shot.

Rosie O'Donnell's bodyguards applied for concealed carry permits.

Hypocrisy on the part of the anti-firearm crowd is a time-honored tradition, as is obfuscating the issue by tying it into hunting and sporting affairs. When in doubt pop a couple of clay pigeons and try for some pro-firearm cred, especially in the wake of the NRA aiding in taking down 23 of their 24 targeted congressmen in the '94 mid term election.

They were legally possessed by the BG's.
The law was broken when they tried to carry them in the Capital. Only sworn officers are allowed to carry firearms there, not private BG's

This is an issue that transcends 'left' or 'right'. The fact that so many of those who advocate removing firearms from the possession of the common citizenry yet see nothing wrong with possessing such weapons themselves is a critical indicator of character and honesty.

For example, the fact that Ted Kennedy spent the seventies and eighties chasing a ban on short-barrelled revolvers and so-called Saturday Night Specials while his bodyguards were in possession of automatic weapons is very telling.

Likewise, Rosie O'Donnell apparently feels that her safety is best protected by armed guards, a luxury that is available to very few people in this country. On the other hand, she advocates taking away the best defensive equipment available to the common citizen. Especially with her attachment to feminist causes, this is doubly hypocritical, because the best deterrent to rape around is the armed woman.

In the case of Kerry, if he thinks such weapons shouldn't be in civilian hands, what business does he have owning one?

Yes he did, but that's not the end of the story. The rub is that one of his few thus-far consistent positions is that no civilian should have such weapons, and yet here he is, a civilian with such a weapon. Furthermore, if it is a full automatic, he is in violation of federal felony statutes.

AFAIK, a "communist chinese rifle" could encompass any number of kinds of guns, I'm sure you gun nuts in here can clarify this.

Secondly, it's likely a display piece or isn't functional at all. No one can say anything at all until we actually find out what it is.
