DVD's most anticipated day since the September 1997 national rollout has arrived, but many reviews have posted audio glitches in Star Wars Episode IV ranging from odd audio cues to garbled dialog. Lucasfilm has issued the following statement claiming the audio issues to be deliberate.
"We are always impressed with how closely fans listen to the many different sound mixes we have made for the Star Wars movies over the years. It is flattering to know that, indeed, the audience is listening. Consequently, each mix comes out differently and any changes that you hear on the all-new Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround EX tracks on the Star Wars Trilogy DVD set are deliberate creative decisions. We can confirm that there are no technical glitches as reported.".
Deliberate or not, fans should be aware of the audio differences.
Yeah, that's a load of bullshit. Why make such glaring audio continuity errors deliberately? I've noticed a significant change in audio quality in some scenes.

GL claims in the commentary that he was aiming for a documentary style movie so there would be sound glitches sometimes or other types of mistakes. First time I'm hearing of this style applied to SW in 30 years.

Christ, and then there's the obvious visual mistakes like the "scratched lightsaber blade", the green lightsaber on the Falcon, the bright blue "interior" of the escape pod on Tatooine... I'm sure leaving all these things in were "on purpose" too...
My inner cynic is starting to kill my inner fanboy, and I'm getting angry that these DVDs are being toted as the "ultimate" release.

I'm beginning to think that GL like Bush will never admit a mistake. Those kind of people truly annoy the shit out of me, especially when they deny what they've done depsite the mountain of evidence.

The problems are only with ANH. The other two films are fine.
I hope so. I'm getting angry watching this.

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet in another thread but did anybody notice the ugly glaring matte boxes around the TIE's in ANH when they attacked the falcon and sometimes during the DS battle? I also sorta noticed them a few times in the ESB asteroid chase. This is quite shocking to say the least, how the hell could the let such things through? Whats even more sad is that in all the VHS releases I NEVER ONCE recall seeing matte boxes. They spent so much time cleaning the film to make an HD capture but they couldnt bother to fix such glaring visual flaws.

I can live with the glitches, the stuff will not ruin the movie for me. The
worst thing, IMO is Luke's lightsaber being green in ANH, but still, it will
not ruin the movie for me.

I dunno, those ugly matte boxes are REALLY distracting and almost ruin the scenes for me whenever I see them. Overall I suppose the movies are ok, but personally, its really cutting it close with the glitches that are there. If Lucasfilm doesnt at least comment on the blatent video glitches soon, I will be worried.

Weren't those matte boxes in there from the original film? I guess they just slipped under ILM's radar during the SEs.

They were really visible in the laserdiscs, too. It would have been cool if they'd fixed them up, but it's hard work, and I'm just glad to have the films in high quality.

I just watched the TIE/Falcon chase scene on my original THX release. The matte boxes are nowhere to be seen and from what I remember of watching the Special Editions, I never saw them there either, not even when I saw them in theatres. This is honestly the first time I have ever noticed the matte boxes in my long history of watching Star Wars.
On the plus side though, I suppose it goes to show the incredible lengths Lucasfilm took in physically cleaning up the original film stock, for which I commend them.

Perhaps when the new DVD's were made the used the ORIGINAL stock, and then inserted the SE elements, plus the new elements, rather than (what I assumed they did before) take the SE stock and clean THAT up.
Perhaps because of this, some of the "fixes" from the SE just didn't show up.
UNLESS the "matte boxes" around the ships were just not visible because of lower brightness on the displays of people's tv's.
Then again, in nearly every scene with ships we get some kind of "flashes" (explosions, blaster fire, etc) that temporarily "illuminate" these boxes.
Intentional, my ass... but maybe Lucas really does believe they are "shields" ; )
I've noticed matt boxes before, they don't bother me. These are OLD films, they can't fix everything.

Don't overreact- this is nothing but fan perfectionist whining- I've watched the DVDs, they are fucking superb- especially for a damn nearly 30 year old film- where nearly all the unjustified whinging (IMO) has come from.
Also, that quote has been taken out of context- it's referring to reversing the sound channels of the music, not every audio glitch in the whole damn thing.
I remember people complaining about the matte boxes still being there in the SE just after they came out, not having a VHS player handy I couldn't check though. I have never actually noticed them in any version, I think if they are so obvious they are spoiling your enjoyment of the film you need to turn the brightness down.
You're missing out if you don't get these, simple as that.
