More than likely a colour balance mistake with the overall shot.

At least to me that seem to be the case, as the saber is blue-green instead pure green as it's in ROTJ, TPM and AOTC

The same with me, it has a hint of green, but it's still mostly blue.

When I read Scooter's site, I saw that he had reacted with the bizarre idea, that only the SE from 97 counts, but not the DVD....

Seems that the better picture quality is not healthy for him.

The saber in ANH looked blue to me in the original film, but perhaps that was crud on the film itself or poor memory perhaps.

Anyway, the same lightsaber when used in ESB is blue throughout.

So continuity wise it should be blue. Though one could argue that Lucas "always intended" it to be green and then when he made ESB decided to change it to blue without explaining it in-universe.

But, Lucas has said that the reason they chose a green saber for Luke in ROTJ is because against the yellow sand of Tatooine a blue saber tends to look more green anyway, so they just changed the color.

Luke only uses that saber in two instances, on Tatooine and on the Falcon. So in the one case a green looking saber could be excusable, but in the other it wouldn't (and that's where the green shot appears).

The other thing is that in AOTC we clearly have blue AND green sabers used against the (albeit more reddish) sand of Geonosis, and Anakin's blue saber used on Tatooine (though at night). The technology is there to make the blue saber show up against the background without looking green. So why wasn't it fixed?

If his saber flashed green for one frame, no big deal (have to see the clip itself in full to know if it's noticable), but if it's green in that whole scene I don't know.

Logic would dictate the saber should be blue all throughout ANH just as it is in ESB...

Just checked his page, and he says that 2004 DVD's > 1997 SE's > Originals, or rather, 2004 DVD's override all other versions of Star Wars OT.

But you know what the REALLY infuriating thing is?

One of the menus on the extras disc is actually that exact scene (rather cooly animated, I might add), BUT, and this is the clincher... Luke's lightsaber in the menu is BLUE.

I must have mis-read it then.

Well, now there is a shield...hehe.

Praise the picture quality of DVD! Are there some more scene that can now be clearly measured? Like when the Avenger vaporises the asteroids?

Slogging through the debate, do you really think he'd be that concise with his desperation? This is "invisible bands of brightness which noone can see but him" man- he's the last person who should be talking about tricks of light.

That'd be because it was the same saber.

Okay...

Bzzzzzzzzzzzt. He also uses it on Hoth (and so did Han, when cutting open the taun-taun), Dagobah, and Cloud City.
So in the one case a green looking saber could be excusable, but in the other it wouldn't (and that's where the green shot appears).
No, it wouldn't be excusable in any case.

Because someone screwed up.

Point. Anyone who has the DVD: Is it green for the entire scene in question?

I imagine RSA will write an essay consisting of many thousands or tens of thousands of words in which he painstakingly explains that the obvious shield-like effect is just the atmosphere glowing from that pitiful 23.5 gigaton superlaser impact of his.

Not in the eyes of anyone with a functioning brain and eyes, but we saw the intellectual calibre of his followers when he opened his short-lived forums (and occasionally, when they have tried to defend him here, always inadvertently providing us with great entertainment in the process). They'll eat it up and quote it as Gospel, the way they always do. They still quote his idiotic Endor "Leia meant 'tomorrow' when she said the fleet would be here any moment" argument as disproof of my hyperdrive speeds, for fuck's sake!

Director commentaries are exactly that; they're a commentary on the action. While they're sometimes useful as a gauge of the original intent of the creator (like the useful and entertaining commentaries on films like The Lord of the Rings and Monsters, Inc.), though, this is not true of the Star Wars commentary because (1) it was recorded almost 25 years after the release of the first film and (2) Lucas is notorious for changing his mind and claiming that the way he says it now is the way it's always been..

Then he'll ignore the fact that it goes away in the area immediately surrounding the impact for a fraction of a second before there's the massive explosion that sends the planet to flaming hell.

This calls for a frame-by-frame! Some of you are obviously able to post pics of the scene, so we should be getting more thorough pics! I want to see the sheild drop like MoO says.

I forget, in the debates was the atmospheric glowing thing discussed, and a quantitative conclusion reached? I don't want to have to slog through all that at the moment.
