Boy with Asperger Syndrome Banned from Public Playground

POE News wrote:What started as a playground spat between school officials and the parents of a child with autistic-like behavior could end up having repercussions for the way school districts treat children with neurological disorders.

The parents of 9-year-old Jan Rankowski are suing Falmouth school officials for banning their home-schooled son, who has Asperger's syndrome, from the town's public playground.
The kid has neurological social problem, so the best course of action is to DENY HIM OPPORTUNITY TO FIX IT!? Yup, only in America...

Wait ... since when do school districts have the power to ban people from public property that isn't the school's?

The kid was bullying younger kids, swearing at older kids, he kicked one kid, and he ignored the playground supervisors. Why the hell SHOULDN'T he be barred from the playground? Because he has a neurological disorder? Too fucking bad; maybe his parents should keep him under control instead of going after the school board and everyone else.

Certain conditions cannot be remedied by just letting the sufferer mingle with others sans-condition. However, in this case it seems the authorities have got the wrong end of the stick and are unable to comprehend that the kid may just be able to fit in with normal society standards if given a chance.

A kid with Asperger's Syndrome can understand that you have to listen to a playground supervisor if his parents did their jobs. There's nothing about Asperger's Syndrome that necessarily makes kids defiant or incapable of respecting authority. The kid is just being a brat and his parents are blaming it on his Asperger's Syndrome.

I was going to post a reply almost exactly like that, but only the first sentence of the one I posted remained of that.

From what I read it seemed social interaction was a good thing, but if that's the details I missed, then no, the kid shouldn't be allowed in public if such hostilities are present. It doesn't matter if eventually he may learn, the other parents don't need their kids to be beaten to a pulp over some political correctness.

Excellent point, Darth Wong. Sounds to me like like the kid's got another problem as well that's probably unrelated to his Asperger syndrome.

No, there's got to be something else. I have Asperger's Syndrome, and the only people I was defiant to were those suffering from the aforementioned hyper-testosterone aggression disorder. There's one way his disorder could cause this from what I know. Asperger's makes you like routines, and it's hard to change a routine when you have it, but the only way he would be set in a rut of bullying other kids is if he was allowed to get into it. If someone with Asperger's develops all the right "routines," he can function with people never knowing he has the disorder... until something out of routine comes up. On the other hand, if a patient is allowed to become a regular little brat, he's going to stay that way until serious effort is put into helping him change. In short, the disorder couldn't have caused this behavior, but it is very likely to aggravate it once the behavior develops.

I am too, Rogue Niner. Asperger Syndrome, while it makes me act weird, is no real impediment to my life or job-holding ability (which btw [RED HERRING, yes I know] my predilection to potsmoking is no impediment either [/RED HERRING]) in any way whatsoever. :D

The kid has no excuse, the parents have no excuse, and the school board has no excuse. They all acted pretty much as wrongly as possible.

Why does the school board have no excuse? Wouldn't "he's a danger to other children" be their exceuse?

I think the question is why the school board feels they can exclude someone from a public playground.
Hell, if that's the way it is nevermind me, but I find that curious myself.

Most like it's an open to the public playground, which is on school property. That's the case at some of the playgrounds in my area.
